Ok I just Wana say I just watched this bloke on you tube talking about a major issue with the 4 speed gear box and the radiator fluid mixing together or some s**t like that, it's ment to be a recall On all ba mOdels but u no what ford are like when it comes to helping there customers!!
Anyway he mentions getting a trans cooler kit installed and or a new aftermarket radiator to prevent the problem happening between 150 and 180000 ks I think it was. What does everyone no about this issue? And where do I buy a trans cooler kit? Also where does it go? as I have no idea! Post's would be appreciated, if u haven't seen this clip on you tube pm me and I'll send u the link. Drive safe!!

it was a bit of an issue with genuine factory radiators from au and ba, no recall as most of the radiators lasted past the waranty period.. you can get a factory bf type cooler that bypasses the radiator cooler, but i would go for something a bit better like a pwr trans cooler.. search ebay for pwr trans cooler kits for ba..

Ok thanks for that.
I'm still a bit confused how does it work differently to my stock radiator ? Fill me in.

the stock cooler runs through a copper tube in your radiator to keep trans oil temperature down, when it fails the trans fluid goes into your radiator and your coolant goes into your trans pretty much destroying it,
the external type cooler runs from the trans oil lines to the cooler which is a bit like a small radiator, the trans oil is circulated through the cooler which uses air to cool the oil rather then hot water. the aftermarket pwr type cooler mounts infront of your radiator,, here is something like what i use in both my ed and our au.. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-BA-BF4-SP ... 19c8351ac3 |

should sit infront of your old radiator mate.as troyman said works like a radiator but for the transmission to cool it down lol pwr is a good brand.

I have my radiator trans cooler bypassed, this is how a lot of taxis are done. There is however some arguments for and against this way. Some say the radiator cooler should be use to get the trans up to operating temp and keep it there and that the external one is only required for towing. Of course you'd then need to change your radiator and live in hope it never failed. Mines been like this for 2 years, still ok
A picture of my cooler

the few trans places ive been to have reccomended bypassing the radiator cooler as heat is the btr's enemy.
the only issue i see is if you start the car and drive the car hard while its cold or if it runs to cool the lock up in the converter wont stay locked up in freeway driving.. |

is their two types of transcoolers or something?? cause ive seen ones that sit in front of the radiator then ive seen ones that sit to the side of the radiator on the drivers side. im planing on eventually getting one, but at the moment the cars just below 80 000km's and doesn't tow... don't even have a tow pack so im not to worried yet.
slightly off topic, but driving in sequential mode and keeping the car at about 3k revs for a extended period of time (less then a couple of mins) is that likely to heat up your trans? also if you harden up the shifts by tuning will that heat up the trans aswell.

First of all stop using shifter it's mainly for towing

I agree, and the place my transmission gets serviced at agrees and they bypass it for the local taxis they service. But I know some people will argue you need both..

That will do the job, the one in my car is a Ford one. I think PWR is the brand my mate uses in his shop

I wonder how much of this "plague" comes down to piss poor maintenance on the owners behalf.
For instance, flushing the radiator and changing the coolant every year. Not letting it turn into straight water, expire then start corroding parts of the cooling system. Too many people rely on the Ford service manual rather than using common sense. I acknowledge that some had problems early on... But the later ones could be based on lack of servicing. No where does the ebay fatty say he's serviced the car adequately, nor whether he's changed the coolant at any time. I do like how he / his mechanics claim every BA Falcon has had this problem. Ford made 200,000 BA Falcons, and it seems they all reside in Perth. |
