Any reason you need to leave it in the car?

yer basicall remove the leads off the battery and hook up the charger!
as for fualt codes they should come back anyways... or if you are real worried all u do is modify a ciggy plug to carry a 9 volt battery and plug that in. this shoudl put power through the ecu and keep fault/radio codes etc stored

Good thinkin Disco Frank. You might need to put a diode in series with the 9V battery to Idiot proof it so you dont blow the 9V battery up when you re-connect the car battery. Have you tried 9V battery trick
You shouln't need to take the caps off the battery they are vented anyway unless your battery is totally sealed. Just make sure the battery is topped up with de-mineralised water before charging and put the caps back on. If you are going to charge with the leads still on it probably wouln't be a bad idea to connect the negative charger lead to a good earth on the block. You've got the right idea trickle charging a totally dead battery you need to bring them back from the afterlife gently. good luck

You should be able to buy one over the counter at Repco or bursons or the like just plug it into the cig lighter socket
