Just wanted to find out if this is a common problem with BA's. Its a completely stock wagon. I think it just generally does this when cold, after it starts, its fine for the day. It will just crank over, but not start. Might take a minute, might take hours. Has had a new battery.
Am I wrong in thinking it may be the starter motor stuffing up? How can we test for fuel pressure and spark in a BA? Is there a common electronic/security problem? I know with the E-Series the smartlock can disable the car when it plays up. Thanks guys. |

this may sound dumb, but humour me and pour hot water over the pcm under the bonnet next time it wont start, you will most likely find it will start and run. Have seen a few BAs do this now.

yeah thats the one. LH wheelarch above the strut mounting. Its caused by a fault inside the PCM.

ok. Could be the timing cam Phasers. does it sound like it losses compression while cranking?

I thought it was the ECU. Unplug and replace, or programming needed? What fits and what doesn't? Thanks very much. |

PCM, ECU, Same thing - although PCM is the more correct term
ECU - Electronic Control Module, PCM - Power Train Control Module. Technically there are 5+ ECU's in a BA (3 of which are under the dash) so they gave them individual names. Unfortunately not as simple as a reflash . It will need to be repaired or replaced as the circuit board inside is damaged. |

Thats what I meant, to get another one. I meant does it need to be programmed to the car. Being just the computer for the drivetrain, I know now that it should just plug in and work if it is the correct one. I thought maybe the PCM was security related.
I just need to know what is compatible. I'll get in touch with FTG. Thanks very much. |

ya will need to be re programmed. Just try get a unit with the same tear tag number. It's the larger digits on the serial number sticker. This is what identifies the compatibility with the car

Bugger. One of the ford wreckers should be able to sort it. Thanks very much for the help.

This seems like the same thing I have experienced ford-4l-and-6-cylinder-f1/ba-sr-starting-issues-t88379.html
If it does it again I'll try the hot water trick. |
