Hi all, have purchased a 90 EA CFI 4 speed auto wagon which only seems to run on gas(fuel gauge is hooked up to it etcand if I try to switch over, car dies)
My question is it overheats to the max and idles/,runs with a slight miss so in what order would we perform which actions to iron out these problems? thanks |

for starters if its a 1990 model you been ripped off as they don't have CFI they are MPFI.
first flush the cooling system, replace plugs and leads, check for leaks,,but deffenantly make sure it's a 1990 model,,don't sound right to me if it is.. one thing,,does it also have petrol or is it dedicated gas

You might be wrong about that. I had an EB 1 - CFI. Definately 90's model.

My grandmothers 92 EB1 is a CFI.
it wasn't until EBII that it was completely phased out. |

well as far as i know the cfi was fased out with the 89 EA's, the 3.2 and 3.9 were the only ones to get the cfi and all 4s were mpfi ,
i have never seen an eb with cfi,,so we better find someone who will know for sure,,i do know the dedicated gas vehicles have a device that looks similar to the cfi throttle body,, nobody here has ever asked about converting a eb cfi to mpfi

Hi, thanks for your replies...how do i check if its dedicated gas?. The switch on the dash says LPG/Petrol. My fella is fairly cluey round cars but this is the first gas vehicle he has ever worked on . The car has a badge on the front mudguards that says 30 on a eagle with outstretched wings
cheers |

I had the very same problem, car suddenly wouldn't run on petrol, turned out fuel pump had died. second problem EAs were prone to blocked radiators, remove radiator and have it professionally cleaned, also check thermostat.

ok, have changed plugs and leads of which a couple were burnt/blistered but its made no difference ie stiil has a miss....rotor button and dizzy look ok. Tho there is no bubbles in surge tank and no water in oil, could it be a head gasket problem?
We were gonna do a compression test but the book says something bout a remote starter(?) is needed to turn motor....does anyone know if this is necessary? thanks |

With the introduction of the 4.0 EB2 MPFI became the standard setup. A mate of mine and myself bought EB's a few weeks apart, back about seven years ago. He bought an EB1 GL 4sp auto with a CFI 3.9 and I bought an EB2 GLi 4sp auto with MPFI 4.0. Needless to say my car went better and was smoother and more economical as well. Does that help you out??

"Ford Falcon" by Ewan Kennedy. It covers every model of Falcon from XK to EF. It lists specs for every variant of those models. Under EB it lists the follwing engines: 3.9 (120kw) with "Single point electronic fuel injection" 3.9MPEFI (139kw) 5.0MPEFI (165kw) 4.0 MPEFI (EBII) (148kw) 4.0 High Performance MPEFI (EBII S-XR6) (161kw) 5.0 High Performance MPEFI (EB GT) (200kw)

LPG is very touchy about an ignition system in top condition.
My EL used to backfire and it took a new set of leads to fix it. Under the right conditions and with stuffed leads a cross fire from one lead to another will cause a spark in a cylinder while the intake valve is open. This of course will result in a backfire.

I swapped leads and plugs to no avail. So thtre's no way to tune at home ?and we were going to test compression but the book says to use a"remote starter".....is this a thing that can be made at home?
thanks |
