Hiyas, Can anyone tell me which pin I need to connect to (out of the 17 possible pins) to make the engine go into the tuning mode? I have an ellerys workshop manual but it doesnt show the actual pin, just a pic showing the complete connection near the fuse holder.
From what I have read, I then earth that pin and start the motor which will then run at 1500rpm and will allow me to set the timing using a timing light.. Thanks for any info...Mick... |

Should just be a matter of shorting the top and bottom far left pins.

okies...thanks heaps for the info...
so I only have to short the top and bottom pins on the left and that will put it itno the tune mode? When I do that the motor runs at about 900rpm for about 10 seconds then drops back to 600rpm... it then seems to fluctuate between 600 to 900rpm...have left it running like that for 10 minutes or so and it never seems to settle?? Is that normal or could it be my connection of the wire between sti and earth? Also is there an easy way to get to the distributor adjustment bolt? I cant even see it, let alone get a spanner on it!! (my apologies if these questions seem a little basic but this is the most modern car I have ever owned..(my previous car was a 1970 ht holden...it was a little more basic to work on) |

Further to this, the reason why I am trying to do all this is that the car started to run a little rough at idle..changed plugs air filter etc..but didnt bother with timing as most people told me that the el rarely needs the distributor adjusted....and with me being a novice with a 90's model car i thought that to be true until now..Thanks for any help..mick..

The dizzy clamp is held with a bolt that has 1/2 inch head (ie. use 1/2 inch spanner) - this is located to the rear of the dizzy base. Altho you're working blind it's easy enough to get at once you take off the intake "snorkel" to the airbox - just watch that hot water pipe at front/under the intake (ouch!).
The EL can take some time to drop into timing mode - but it's like 3 to 5 minutes, not 10. You can tell when it's there because there's a sudden drop in exhaust note and something of a drop in rpm - and the timing lite will show the mark dropping back.
