in my EL fairmont im running regular unleaded, ive tried BP ultimate and didnt really notice a difference apart from running a little smoother, the power didnt change much and didnt get anymore k's from a tank. My question is should the timing be done to suit the higher octane fuel or does the computer do it automatically.

You could probably advance the timing a bit, if you were going to use higher octane all the time, if you used ulp it would ping, i use it because it is a cleaner burn, and doesnt clog the ISC and other things up.

i noticed the same thing when i out ultimate in my car. no extra power or ks from the tank. but it didnt run any smoother either.
i gave it a couple of tanks to give it the benefit of the doubt, but at $12 a tank more, i went back to regular unleaded. |

EL's have a knock sensor and are supposed to run the maximum advance for the fuel flowing into them, at all times.
Therefore you may not find that advancing the timing would do anything anyway.

the only way to get more power would be to get a piggy back ecu and have it programed to run on 98 octane then u would get more power

So basically the only benefit is a cleaner burn for 10c a ltr more, i cant see the piont then!

Really? Im of the opinon that i didnt buy a nice(ish) car to run crap fuel and oil in it. Lol, dont have much choice nowadays. But use a fuel like ultimate and there's also plenty of cleansing benefits to be had. As the EL has a dizzy its quite easy to advance the timing, not so easy for an EF. Knock sensors are present on these engines but mapping will only allow a certain advance. Knock sensors arent flawless.

Can anybody explain how to advance the timing on an EA falcon? Not sure how to do it, or if it can be done ??

Basically like any other car - loosen the dizzy and get a timing light on there. A little more to it with EEC.... you need to put the engine into 'base timing' mode, done by putting into diagnostic mode. This is needed to keep timing static. Otherwise EEC will be adjusting timing at the same time you are advancing - you wont know exactly where it's at.

Ok, so how do i get the car into diagnostic mode? Also how much advance would be recommended, or too much ?

first pins on the diag. connector, just bridge them together, (top and bottom) ... losen the dizzy, 13mm bolt on a long extension arm, to advance, move the dizzy towards the fire wall, to retard, moving the dizzy towards the radiator. Using a timing light, move the dizzy to advance, I've moved mine bout 2cm along the balancer ... But mines a ED .. You'll know if you have go to far, because when you go to drive your car, it will ping, if so, pop the bonnet again and retard the dizzy . |

In regards to Premiums generally I have found through experience on my EL that BP Ultimate only gives a slight power increase over regular unleaded, and like others have said the Idle is 100% smoother. Vortex I have found to have about the same power as Ultimate and I also get s**t hesitant idle. However with Shell Optimax I get a 10% power gain over other PULPS but like with Vortex I get a hesitant idle but not as bad as with Vortex. Mobil Synergy 8000 has same effects as Vortex. Maybe timing advance would be better on my EL as well
