Just want to know what sealant is best to use on the front of the head (on top of the timing case) and how much or how little to use.
I have been told to run a bead under the seal and on top of the seal and just let it go over and under the head gasket by about 5mm either way. this correct? thanks.

Throw the seal in the bin. Go to toyota and buy a tube of black engine sealer.
Put a big enough bead on to fill the gap. |

When I did my head gasket, I used Permatex Red (Link) for that particular area. I also used it on the rocker cover. I found I can also make my own gasket using gasket maker by just making a thick bead, let it sit for a bit to touch dry (but no completely dry) and then assembling the components together for a good seal.
Not sure if the Permatex Black (Link) is an equivalent to tickford_6's suggestion from Toyota.

i used the blue loctite silicon, i put it on top of the seal and hasn't leaked

That toyota stuff is made by ThreeBond and they make better stuff than permatex imho, and I love permatex products. ThreeBond isn't publicly popular but it is with oem's. Harley's another one I think. Toyota stopped selling sump gaskets for most of their 4wd's in the 90's and supplied a tube of that sealant instead, works fantastic.
Most oil problems come down to a dab of silicone in the right place, as opposed to a caulking tube full of the most expensive stuff you can buy.

Threebond is the stuff to use. Brilliant stuff any good motorbike shop will have a tube put it over and under the gasket and leading on to the head gasket as you say i done this and no leaks

I just used black gasket maker, threebond I think.
Under the seal an on top of the seal, an in the corners. Had no issues. |

toyoa black and loctite blue are the only gasket sealants i would reccomend useing, they actually work, and when they say oil and chem resistant they mean it, i couldnt tell you the amount of times ive replaced the tappercover gaskets on the datsun and it leaked with tht seallys instant gasket but when i used loctite blue it never leaked, i allways keep a few tubes in the old broken fridge, and a tube in the car, it's allso good for sealing up leaky fittings when you change radiator hoses.

used to use blue now i only use loctite copper no leaks worth the extra 3bucks imo
