Hey all,

I have been driving around in the XR a fir bit lately and ive just started to notice something which has startled me greatly. :?

My exhaust tip seems to be building up a large amount of carbon, and on start up there seems to be a bit of smoke coming out as well.

Only happens when i start it thou as i have had someone drive behind me and it definately doesnt smoke while driving.

I have checked a few things out such as oil level and colour, transmission ,coolant, airfilter etc. and basiaclly everything is fine i have not lost ne oil since it was last service 3000kms ago and the colour is fine too.

Would it pay to check out the plugs and leads?

Thanks guys.

I would not stress to much about it, my exhaust is always black ... inside and around the tip..

forever cleaning carbon off it .

could just be your plugs are old and not burning out all the fuel ..

its fine, the ecu gives it more fuel on initial start up/cold start.

Carbo is fine, better to be a lil too rich then lean

Yer, mine always blows a puff of smoke at startup as well. Nuthin to worry about (unless it's blue and/or you are getting ash deposits etc on the spark plugs etc..).

Mmm not completely sure about colour, i think its black  But it doesnt smell like oil or ne thing and it doesnt continue to smoke while driving. :?

I will get the leads and plugs checked out this week, and see if they are a bit dirty or not

So you think its nothing to worry about.

Happens mostly on gas too. I have noticed more smoke on start ups when its on gas, but i only did it once.

I think it might be due for a tune or something

Thanks guys for the replys :P

If its black its just cold start rich. Probably nothing to worry about. If you really want to put your mind at ease get it on a dyno and get the A/F mix checked to make sure its not running way to rich. Could be the oxy sensor in the exhaust or the Map sensor starting to die.

Not too sure, i had it on the dyno a few months ago and back then the A/F ratio's were pretty reasonable.

What about a bottle of Octane boost and clean would it pay to use some of that. I was using it previously, but due to PULP being expensive i stopped using it a couple of months ago.

That might stop the smoke, not sure if it would actualy fix the problem thou.

But yeah i will definately check it out cause i would rather have peice of mind knowing that theres nothing wrong with the car

Thanks for the replys

You can run 3 or 4 tanks of PULP through it, let its cleaners do there thing. Probably cheaper than a bottle of injector stuffer....um...cleaner in the end too.

leaky valve stem seals could cause smoke on start up.

a grey black smoke with an oily smell! get someone to start it for you preferably after its been sitting over night and have a sniff of the smoke. what happens the oil from the rocker seeps into the cylinders via the valve stems and on firing it burns. when i had my head crack tested and so on i had my seals replaced at the same time, its an EL.

Cool but as far as i know the smoke that has been coming out the exhaust has not smelt like oil.

If in fact it was a oil smell wouldnt this mean that im burning up oil which in turn means i would be loosing oil/level? :?

But yeah it could not be the case as my oil level has not dropped one bit since its last been serviced. :P

But yeah i will have another look ne way.

Thanks again

dont forget one drop of oil goes along way! (especially if it sprays from the rocker cover!) if it was leaky stem seals it wont be all of them maybe just one, but one drop of oil in the cylinder will smoke a bit. you may not notice 50ml loss from 5lts of oil.
