hey guys, just noticed the last few days my car has been running a fair bit hotter than usual. Usually it sits around 1/4 on the temp gauge and goes up to 1/2 if its being pushed, but the last few days its been sitting between half and just under the red zone, even when driving with a very light foot. Water is fine, oil is on the OK mark and will be getting more in tomorrow. Any ideas? Its 96 EL with just under 190k on the clock.
cheers casey

the obvious things i can think of is possible sticking thermostat, blocked radiator core or faulty thermo fan. thats the most common i can think of.

Only way I know of to check the thermostat is take it out and put it in boiling hot water but that only tells weather it's seized or not, doesn't show what temps it'working at. For what it's worth gust throw a new one in.

Could be a faulty water pump not pushing the water through as well ... the internals corrode out and the vanes become no more .... hence no water flow.
Could be a number of things though ... blocked radiator ... seized thermostat ... pipes blocked up with rust/sludge. When replacing a thermostat .... the best one to get is the actual Ford/Motorcraft one specified for your engine as well. While you are there ... get a new seal/gasket as well.

I had a similar problem and it was a set of faulty spark plug leads. They weren't very old, but when I tested the resistance, one wasn't showing any and another was intermittently not showing any resistance. Could also be a faulty spark plug. Took the leads back to the supplier and they gave me a new set and problem fixed.
May not necessarily be your cooling system. Could be something making some of your cylinders run lean or a blocked cat converter (less likely). Just some ideas.
