Hi Guys,
I have a efi6 auto which is overheating after about 20 mins worth of driving when i pulled over i noticed the water boiling in the radiator tank. There appears to be no water leaking from the engine or radiator and the oil does not appear milky. There appears to be no coolant in the tank only water! Will a coolant flush and new coolant and thermostat fix the problem? When i purchased the car it used to sit high up on the temprature gauge in the o to n section of normal! What could be cause and how can i get it diagnosed? do u guys think it has done a headgasket? |

prolly the thermostat stuck.
remove the radiator and flush it *easy* check for anything blocking the radiator and check that the fans work. check to see if the water pump is actually flowing *remove top hose* for the hell of it, buy a new radiator if its the original one, $150ish flush the system and install distilled water with Tectalloy extra cool GOLD 1ltr treats 15ltrs) hope this helps also check fuses and relays to make sure they work.

I'm no expert but it sounds like it could be a dodgy thermostat or perhaps a blackage in the system somewhere, preventing the water from circulating thru the fins properly?
I guess you could try a coolant flush and bash a new thermostat in and see how you go. It never hurts to do those kind of things anyway, unless you're super strapped for cash. If its still f**k you might have to take it to a radiator place or mechanic and see if they can do some kinda flow test or something. **Disclaimer: I don't know s**t, this is purely guess work

Thanks kytrox, Ill get the coolant flush and install a new therostat and check the fuses and hopefully fingers crossed it will fix it and it isnt the headgasket! |

Are your thermo fans turning on?

if it has not had a coolant change or any coolant in it for a long time, the fins on the water pump could have coroded away.. there for no circulation.. could be why it has been running hot..

yeah that doesnt sound good. If your thermostat isnt stuck, and there is coolant flowing, then yep the headgaskets probably thrown in the towel

Take it back to the car yard or person you just bought it from. They would have known about the head gasket because you said on your test drive the temp gauge read high.
Get them to pay for the repairs.

Get them to pay for the repairs. Don't like the chances of that.. buyer beware and all.

Stains could be from the welch plugs to.
If your leaking above them and all around cylinders 4-5-6 then ya pretty much up for one. if your up for a new gasket and Not doing it yourself. MAKE sure the mechanic uses an AU gasket and not some Povo off the shelf ACL monotorque

Water "boiling" in the radiator tank....it wasn't boiling...it was air coming from a f*cked head gasket methinks...
