URGENT! Doing an engine swap within the next week. Swapping an EF engine into my EL because mine's f**k and won't make it to Melbourne for my music set on the 30th the way it is. What's involved with swapping between the different models and what do I need to buy? My mate mentioned an EF Auto ECU, but there has to be more. He said he has no idea when it comes to timing and all that and neither of us have messed with ignition systems short of changing the coil and TFI.

Is it possible to drop a coil pack engine into an EL with an EF Auto ECU? Or is there way more to it?

why not just get another EL motor for it? or do you have a EF one lying around? there may be more to it than just changing ECUs but I doubt it, maybe something to do with the BBM?

cheers

You could just swap all the EL Accessories over to the EF engine and it should all plug together fine. The EF has a bespoke ECU due to the EF having coil packs rather than the dizzy on the rest of the E series.

I think that you have to do something with the EF block to fit the EL dizzy. SWC?!

Yeah, only motor I have access to in such a short amount of time (due to money and all that) is my mate's EF he crashed. Are there any detailed guides for swapping over all the dizzy equipment to the EF? Seems straightforward, but I've got a few telling me to swap over a gear, and a few telling me it doesn't need to be done. Would the timing need to be re-done?

just swap the EF gear with the EL gear, to make sure the teeth mesh correctly.

1) Pull the wiring loom from your current EL Engine, swap it over to the EF engine.
2) Remove the Cam Sensor, goes where the dizzy is on the EL.
3) Remove the dizzy from the EL.
4) Remove the gear from the EF Cam Sensor and fit to the EL Dizzy. Then send me the Cam Sensor :D .
5) Fit the EL Dizzy as you would normaly. You may need to mod the clamping plate. Not 100% sure. I know the EF and AU motors clamp in a different position.
5) Remove the EF Engine mounts from the EF Engine. Remove the EL Mounts and fit to the EF Engine. You will need the Passenger side mount plate as this is where the Coil Mounts and is different to the EF Plate.
6) Fit the EL Coil and wire up.
7) All other sensors are the same as for EF as EL.
8) Install engine and fire the b**ch up.

EF/EL engines are basicly the same other than for the Coil Pack/Dizzy and the Engine loom where it plugs into the Engine bay loom.
EF Loom WILL NOT plug into the EL Body loom.

Sorry about all the noob questions, we've just never had to deal with swapping over ignition systems before. What's the easiest way to swap over the gear? Is there a guide anywhere?

Gear is held on the shaft with a pin through the gear and shaft. Punch out the pin on both the Cam sensor and the dizzy. Don't mix up the gears and don't loose the pin. You will need a small hammer and a pin punch. DON'T belt the s**t out of it, you will f**k the dizzy or the gear. Worse still the Cam sensor and I won't be able to use it  .

Install is the reverse and you tap, repeat TAP the pin back in. You may need to file a slight tapper on the pin to help locating it.

Not really, :D . Have a couple of good spare but seeing that you can't get them anymore, always handy.

Becoming mean, advice does not come free any more :D :D

Cheers guys. I might get someone who knows a little more to come do that part for me. It sounds like a delicate job that'd be easy to screw up when doing it for the first time haha.

Its easy as. Undo the 10mm (in my case) or 12mm (in some other peoples cases) bolt holding the clamp down on the dizzy, and lift it out slowly and straight. Youll see exactly how the rotor rotates as it meshes with the gear etc. Then assembly is reverse.
