Went to jump in the car this morning started it, it satrted and then died. tried turning the key again and it just cranked but wouldnt fire. Now i have just worked out if i turn the key off all the way and turn it back on it starts but then dies 5sec later. What could it be? Checked leads to make sure they were all in place on the plugs and dizzy and all are fine. What could have made it not want to run??? Any help would be great need to go too work tonight. It's difficult to be sure without seeing the car first hand.
Is it CFI or MPFI? Have you checked all your vacuum hoses for cracks, leaks or being detached? If you have an MPFI, check that the vacuum hose to the map sensor on the firewall and at the lower rear of the inlet manifold is connected. It could be your cat converter or muffler is blocked and strangling the engine. It would then die on both fuels. It sure sounds like it's fuel related but as it's doing it on gas as well, it's probably electrical. I'd be checking the distributor, coil and condensor as well as checking all leads for shorts or cross sparking. Are your battery terminals, including the small ones, coated in corrosion or are they making clean contact. If they're corroded, pour boiling water over them from a jug and make sure none have split or broken. You may have to start replacing the coil, condensor, distributor cap, hall sensor one by one if you can't use a multimeter to confirm they're getting power. While it's difficult to get at, you should check the inside of the dizzy cap for tracking [shorting sparks]. I'm sorry there's no way I can be more specific from this far away, as you can see there's too many things that can cause your problem. As the car was fine last night, check the vacuum lines first. Paul

That's ok David,
It's one those events that can have many causes, sorry I couldn't be more specific. The dizzy is a good place to start. When you find the problem will you post the result please? Cheers, Paul

CHECK UNDER DIZZY FOR MOISTURE, specialy with LPG.
Is it on a Flat or hill when starting? Or try dissconnecting battery for a few hours to reset the computer?.. Its hard to tell, all you can do is change parts and hope for the best, but it can get so expensive! When did you service it last?... new plugs?

Cool, remember to put those leads back in the same order. And check the gap on the plugs.
Are you getting reco or new dizzy?.. either way all ther same. What about the coil? does it look like its in good condition?

got a brand new dizzy and coil, got new plugs and leads, car pur's like a kitten again even runs better now than before.
I wouldnt be able to tell you if it was the dizzy or the coil or the leads and plugs as i just changed them all at the same time, but i can tell you that it has something to do with one of the four things. The plugs looked rearly bad and i may have just needed to change them and the leads. But because of the high km's and i no that the car needed a good service i decide to just do them all. Thanks to all that helped David |

Yeah they do. Its the kind of job you would only like to do once. But now that i have done it once i would be able to do it again i guess if i had too. No problems in posting result hope it can help others. Just spoke with my father inlaw whos car it was and he said that the plugs and leads were changed ages ago. So imay have just got away with doing that first, but now i have peace of mind that all is new and should last a long time. David |

Okay, my turn for help! I was just driving down my street home from the airport and my car made a nice "clunk" sound as i went up a small hill, then just died. I turned it off, then on and it cranked for a couple times longer than usual before struggling to start up, then i just rolled her home from there. Haven't got time to look now, but I'm going to do an oil+filter change this weekend. Are fuel pumps a big problem with E-series?
While I'm working on her this weekend, I might see if I can solve the problem of heating up gearbox too.
