My EL has a towbar and no trans oil cooler . . . very bad. I have heaps of spare a/c condensors. How about using one of those mounted in the normal place, in front of the existing a/c condensor?

It'd probably work you know.
You are going to hear a lot of yays and nays. I would just try it and monitor it carefully and allways have the tools, oil and parts to swap it out if it fails.

I wonder if the only potential significant issues could be:
- leftover a/c gas somehow being a major problem. I can't see this being a problem as they normally have oil in them to lubricate the compressor. - can it handle the pressure? I reckon the pressure from the trans oil pump is lower than that in the a/c system, but not sure. - does the trans oil pump provide enough pressure to push enough oil against the extra friction of a large cooler? I guess it will be okay, i'm not the first person to fit a large trans oil cooler.

It may work, but mounting and getting right pressure for the oil maybe a drama. but what compacity is the a/c condensor and what is the largerst aftermarket oil cooler out there?

would be groteskly oversized. SHOULD be able to hold the pressure but you wouldnt know. wouldnt be optimised for the job (or large volumes of oil in the cores) there would be stuffing around with the fittings too. and doesnt the tranny flow through the radiator first anyway?
you'd be better off going to pickapart and getting an old one.

the a/c condenser should be able to support over 250si no dramas i was thinking about doin it but i can get the biggest pwr transcooler for about $105 so i didnt bother

Since i would no longer route it through the radiator tank i reckon the extra size is appropriate. Quote: wouldnt be optimised for the job (or large volumes of oil in the cores) The design seems the same as the genuine ford trans cooler fitted to my EB. I would use the EB one but it's so small. Quote: there would be stuffing around with the fittings too. Maybe just hacksaw the fittings off and slide 8 or 10mm ID tranny hose over the pipe and hose clamp, easy peasy, but i haven't checked all the condensors i have, some might be even easier. Quote: you'd be better off going to pickapart and getting an old one. That would cost me more in fuel than buying a new one.

Another thought, what effect might this have on the coldness of my a/c? I figure the more heat you take out of the trans oil and the more air resistance there is the less efficient the a/c will be. But maybe the difference isn't a problem.
Maybe ideally the trans cooler would be after the a/c condensor, and maybe even more ideally after the radiator, seeing as the tranny oil is hotter than the coolant. But there are practical and financial issues with these ideas.

i think it will work ok ..
maybe a bit of over kill.. the only thing i would be concerned about is the restriction of airflow throught the 2 condensers and the radiator.. |

I used a cut down version from a fridge years ago on a 289 powered Escort with C4 auto..
Was used nearly every weekend on club events including rallycross.. It was mounted under boot with fan blowing down through it.. I would say 1/3 would work well.. The whole condenser may restrict alittle ??

In terms of mounting, i might be able to use the existing condensor mounts and just use longer bolts with spacers. That might be neat.
In terms of restriction, one thing i could do is remove some of the fins, maybe even every second one. But that would be boring to do! I don't see a problem with overkill, unless somehow i make the trans oil too cold?, or create another problem such as restriction as mentioned earlier.
