i recently checked my coolant level in my AU Falcon and saw that it was on the low line,
so i added some water to it and went ahead with driving
and at the end of the week i checked it again and it was back down where it was
i dont have a leak anywhere as i have nothing on my driveway,
could it be using the coolant because the concentration is now out?

I would think you might have a leak some where, or check your oil to make sure it hasn't seeped into your oil. If the oil is milky in colour then I would think your head gasket has gone.

Also check your radiator cap, you might need to replace it if it is shagged. It can't hold the pressure and thus lets the coolant out via the overflow tube.

i don't know alot but you shouldn't use water as it will corrode your radiator etc...? and the part your checking is the overflow so the idea is as the car gets hot coolant flows out into the over flow and as it cools down its sucked back into the radiator... so if you fill it up to max when its cold then when it gets hot coolant will leak...

so its fine so long as it doesn't drop below Min...

Good to hear you fixed it :D...

Cam, you can run water for a little while. When you install new cooling system stuff you can run it on water only so that all the s**t in the system gets flushed out after you drain it...then run coolant :D.

But straight water for it's life time...a big no no.

Well as a chemist, I say it doesn't matter what you run through your coolant. So long as there is H2O present in the coolant, something is bound to corrode or rust away. But the higher concentration of H2O in a system the faster things will start to corrode or rust.

I run 50% coolant and 50% water...though I might change it to 50% coolant and 50% distilled water.

Demineralised water should be fine.

Your lucky.

I had the same thing happen to me a week or so ago, long story short, I have a blown head gasket and the piece of s**t is being towed to our mechanic tomorrow.

that sucks much man.

i reckon one of the most valuable things to know is how to replace the head gasket yourself.
