both of the cars i've had BAII xr6 and the BFII xr6t have had this feature
but how does it work i've got a understanding if you happen to have s**t fuel or something the knoc sensor picks up pinging its retards the timing or advances it but what or how does it move the cam while the engine is running hope thats not a silly question??

i think you will find they have dual vct, if not both deffinately the bf. it actively alters the cam timing 'on the fly' whilst the engine is in operation depending on conditions. think of it as an automatic vernier gear.

Yep, basically a hydraulically operated vernier cam gear.
http://delphi.com/manufacturers/auto/po ... train/vcp/ In the three generations of falcon that have had VCT, each system is different. The AU system is a one way system (on or off at a 3000rpm triger point). Whilst the BA is a linked 2 way system (both cams move together throughout the rpm range). The BF is an independant 2 way system (each cam has its own map) and is the best system if you are chasing every ounce of driveabillity you can get out of the engine. |

So can BA ECM software be upgraded or can BF software be uploaded to a BA ECM to incorporate dual independant valve timing? Or do you just have to swap over the ECM completely? In saying that, are the pinouts on the BF computer the same as a BA?

well if you checked that link out you whould realise that it's a mechanism fitted to individual cams... do you really think that ford would of put the hardware in the ba's and left out the software ?
that links actually an awsome link to anyone who wants to make their old single cam vct without converting to au... which has it's benifits. generally it helps to read up and do some research before you ask questions, followed up by silly questions. saves some of us getting cranky.

BA DOHC sixes do have dual cam phasers, i know that, but they are both locked into the same patterns (ie NON dual INDEPENDANT), BF's however DID come out with DUAL INDEPENDANT cam timing meaning that both cams are adjusted seperately from each other. As far as i know this wasn't implemented into the BA sixes due to time and development constraints. My question WAS, can the BF software be uploaded to a BA ECM, or are the two ECM's a completely different breed all together and if they are different are the pinouts still the same? |

I may be mistaken, but this was looked at before and i THINK the phasers run off the same solinoid set in a BA and individuals in BF's
However, i THINK there was talk of some sort of retrofit and you could do it. but this is a thread going back 18+ months ago and i cant remember that much

Unfortunately those seppo pricks refuse to deal with anyone unless they are auto manufactures. I tried to get a phaser for the uni to play with a few years ago and they just gave me the run around. As for a pre AU VCT conversion, where are you going to fit the phasor? The Borg warner ones are a little thinner than the Delphi ones but you still need room for them and you have to design a secondary oiling system to provide oil to move the phaser. Then you need an ecu to control it. Its a lot of f**k around in the search for the perfect torque curve. Be easier to drop a BA/F/FG motor in an e series. With regards the the BA/F. I believe the physical difference is a wiring difference. The solenoids are wired in parallel off the same circuit on the BA instead of independent circuits on the BF. Basically all you need is a few changes to the engine loom and a BF PCM (possibly flash a BA PCM with BF software but don't quote me on that one). |
