who has installed one in their car? and when you were after the degrees for the valve lift did you find you had to move the timing chain forward on the gear 1 tooth to get the Valve degree you were after? cheers

you wouldnt move the timing chain.

you would set up the vernier gear so it is set on the zero mark and fit it straight in making sure the keyway stays in the same position.

Doesn't the ECU control the timing? If so, what difference does it make to advance it using vernier cam gear? The ECU will just retard it back to where it is most comfortable. At least, that's what I think!

to do it properly you need to find the correct TDC on my car it was 2 degrees out from the fatory mark.

then you you need to either find lift at TDC or 50thou lift point.

from there if you have a huge cam and it need a few more revs then you'd like or is a little slack down low you can advance the cam timming to bring the power curve down slightly or retard the timming to move it up slightly.

always cheacking you have enough piston to valve clearence. play it safe and run a min of 100thou on both sides

Is there a easy way to measure the piston to valve clearance?

take the valve springs off the number one valves and replace them with dummy springs. (i use springs from inside pop-up garden sprinklers. dad is in lawn car (jims mowing) so we get a few broken ones)
then bolt the rocker gear back on rotate the engine the degree that you want to messure how much further you can push the valve down and thats you clearence.

jaysen has a good doco on it somewhere on here and goes into a bit more detail. but you get the picture

do all the messuring when at the same time. and keep it all on hand.
id messure for up to 3degrees retard and advance so you know where you are if you want to play with cam timming

Yep I'm away of jaysens doco, used it to put the cam in. It's just a bit of a pain in the a**. Taking the rocker gear out and getting the HLA's in right is a very challenging job.

I was hoping there might be another way. Maybe I should invest in a dial gauge, or just advance my cam as far as I can :)

we put the cam gear on in standard postion set to zero degress and wound her over to top dead centre. then we put the degree thingo on the heel of the Lobe on number 1. then it says to turn the car over by hand until it goes back to top dead centre, and the degree thing should read 1.6mm but when we do it its more like 6.0mm!!! and we cant get enoughf ajustment out of it to change it that dramaticly!

what cam are you using?? and what degree thing?

edit. is this the crow stg3 you are using p/n 2222519

if so you should 3thou intake valve lift at 20 degree BTDC

set your crank to 20 BTDC and adjust your cam to get 3thou valve lift

seat timming is far easyer to use.

yeah stage 3 crow cam. the cam card says the degrees on lobe 1 should be at 1.6mm (1 n a half times around the degree gauge) with 1 crank of the engine from TDC to TDC but the gauge goes around at least 4-5 times!

2222519, i can get the right Adjustment but to do so i have to move the teeth around 1 tooth on the Gear which doesnt seem right to me. i dont want to risk the valves hitting the pistons

did you try to set it up by the valve timming?

you should never have to move the sprocket on the chain.

dont worry about what the cam card says.
the card will also have the cam timming on it set it up using that. seat timing is %99 of the time messured at 3 thou lift
