I've been speaking to Chris from Wade Cams about getting a 1604 for my EF. I asked about Vernier Cam Gears and he said it's not necessary. He also said:

Quote:
The vernier cam gears are appropriate when you are looking for the absolute maximum horsepower achievable in conjunction with a dyno. You should be able to set up the cam in the engine without having to go to that expense. You would probably be looking at about $200 to buy

I just wanted to see if anyone else had any opinions or is it worth me getting one or what ever?

Only need one if the cam design requires it.. obviously Wade is confident that the 1064 doesnt require one.

depends how much you grind and the lobe separation change you make.

If its a lot then the cam will need to be dialed in with a vernier gear.

You might not need it...best way is to check your lobe lift after installing the cam.

If it is out...PM me as I have a spare one sitting around that I haven't used. Well....it hasn't been used at all, just taken out of packaging.

I'd let you have it for $90 plus postage.

Also its from crow cams but fits all cams.
Hope that helps.

I'm not saying that he does need it. But that if he does...why pay $200 for one when I have an unused one for $90?

Basically, check you lobe lift to that on the cam spec sheet, if its correct, then you don't need one. If its incorrect then you won't be getting optimum power and efficiency.

Easy as that.

As was said - the people who supply the cam will be the ones to listen to - if Wade reckoned an ADJUSTABLE cam gear (they're not verniers) was necessary they'd have said so.

On the other hand JMM made it clear I would need to precisely time my cam with an adjustable gear when I got it off them.

Aside from the broad performance issue - an adjustable cam gear does give you flexibility to tune the engine A LITTLE BIT toward top end or bottom end performance - tho the amount you can get is not as great as you might think, and the offset can make it not worthwhile - ie. you might gain noticeable 10 kw in the bottom end of the curve but lose like 25 or 30 at the top and vice versa. After much f**k around I've found the best overall performance to be exactly where the cam's specified setting is (surprise, surprise).
