I'd be guessing you have a short in there somewhere which is about to turn nasty. In the absence of any other info, I'd be pulling the covers off the steering column and examining the wires for burn marks. With the barrel exposed you can turn the key on and attempt to trace back the cause of the overheating.
I find it easier to work on the steering column area with the drivers side seat removed, you would need a T50 Torx bit for this.
Important..First though, check that the all battery terminals, large and small are clean and making good contact, especially the earth contact on the block.
Hope this helps,
Paul

I would think its more like a resistive contact, you should not run it like that as the risk of a fire is there.

My old EF did the same thing, take the key out and it'd burn your hand, same thing happens in my BA MKII. As above I mostly noticed it in hot weather, but im pretty sure it did the same in winter... EF was in my hands for 7yrs and didnt have any starting issues, had heaps of other issues tho :)

Noticed mine did it the other day... After being outside in the heat all day. Hasn't done it since.

Sounds like your ignition barrel is acting like a cigarette lighter. lol
theres a bottleneck within the ignition barrel & wires. remove the barrel & clean it with electrical cleaning solvent{spray can} this will dissolve/clean out any conductive dirt & metal shavings. check the wires making sure it isn't fray at the connections.

OR see an auto electrician- could be the start of some major electrical problems... chain reaction if you know what I mean!

if it is still hot when theres been no acc or ignition on all day, check the 'power always on' circuits.

if your gonna drive it then keep a charged fire extinguisher on hand- everyone should have one in their car anyway imo.
