I own a 98 EL Futura with 117,000km on the clock, very tidy and drives like a dream however there is one thing that has bothered me since owning the car, When I am driving at 90km/h I can hear a type of humming sound... It's hard to explain and I know it's hard interpreting sounds from words but it sounds like vvvVVVvvvVVVvvvVVVvvvVVVvvv (and so on) and I can feel a slight vibration through what seems to be the driveline as the sound occurs...
The car has done this the whole time I have owned it and the problem hasn't gotten any better or worse. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it may be? Thank you in advance for you help, -Shano |

I recently replaced both sets of front wheel bearings and know I packed and tightened them appropriately. The sound was present before and after the wheel bearings being replaced. I appreciate your advice but I am 100% certain it's not wheel bearings... |

Driveshaft. Try rotating it 180 and see if the rumble persists. The hardest thing to get rid of!!

I am not familiar with converter lockup?

I don't know an extensive amount about driveshafts but i'm wondering if the symptoms I described could be related to an out of balance driveshaft or worn Uni joints? and if so how can I tell?

Does it happen all the time at that speed? As in under acceleration/coasting?
If the humming/vibrations only occurs when you are decelerating or not on the throttle, it could be the tail shaft being out of alignment. If it happens in all situations, then it may be many things, starting from wheels to suspension. Have the wheels been balanced? Are the tyres in good wear?

I have thoroughly checked my suspension and everything seems to be in great condition (apart from the rear sway bar link bushes which are a tad squished unevenly) |

I'm guessing the pitch of the humming increases slightly as you speed up and it only happens in 4th?

I have the same noise from what you discribe.
I've done my uni joints, no fix, rotated the shaft 180, no fix, I'm left to think it's either the extention housing bush or something like the exhaust brace near the transmission hitting on the crossmember. |
