The VN Commodore SS weighed in at 1377 kilos.
The EL XR6 weighs in at 1536 kilos. Power to weight wise the VN has 119kw per tonne vs El at 106kw per tonne. That is over 10% more power per tonne to the VN! That is nor the whole story tho, the 304 V8 has bags of torque from idle, where as we all know, the 4.0 litre takes a little while to come on strong. The VN SS is the quicker car by some margin. The EL will be quicker around a track due to better brakes, and better handling, but in a traffic light duel the EL driver will have his a** handed to him on a platter! I've been there and done that on more occasions than I care to remember............ It amazes me that some guys on this forum will just say "the ford is quicker......" than almost any car purely because they have one. Get over it.......who cares.......the VN is an absolute pile of sh_t anywho. It looks stupid, rattles more than a baby toy, and has nothing else going for it other than straight line speed! My old (pretty healthy) EB XR8 Manual wouldn't keep up with a VN SS, but I still had the better car! Anyway, that's what I reckon!

Those figures don't mean anything! One could get power down to the road better than the other. VN SS's are not that quick. I'm positive an XR6 manual would beat it. We're not talking group A's here, just your regular SS.
I will tell my own little story: Back when our family wagon (EF series 2 auto) was about 90 000km old, we raced a VL (!) Commodore 5.0litre. It had the jump on us and got 1 body length in front. However, it didn't get any further in front and we passed it after reaching 140km/h. This Commodore seemed quite healthy too. We slowed down to turn off, and this bloke was so intent on beating us he passed us and turned off in front of us. I don't think he enjoyed losing. Anywayz, a VL is even lighter than a VN, still had the 5.0L V8, so would most likely have more kW per tonne. Why did a heavy family wagon match it? For the same reason an EL XR6 MANUAL would match or beat a VN SS. A Falcon with a manual gearbox has pretty serious go! |

Ahh VL's weren't injected, and had bugger all power due to the conversion to unleaded. They had like 122kW or something stingy like that. They are slower than the RB30's lol.

People give you cold, hard, facts, and then someone with personal experience 'disproves' them. 140k's? Dragstrips ain't long enough for a stock EF auto to reach that... That's like me putting a 2.92 diff in the Sprint, dragging an M5, then passing it after it's been hitting it's 250km/h limiter for 3 hours... And then claiming the win by posting on here. edit: Or I could switch on my brain and use voxaces much shorter, better argument

What's your problem with personal experiences? I find little stories can be interesting!
It wasn't on a drag strip, unfortunately, but on a public road from a railway crossing! It was RELATIVELY safe. |

Yeah they are interesting, I don't disagree.
Very unreliable though. For instance. Sipheren and I were travelling in his cammed/exhaust EA Falcon equipped with fordmods sticker when a dude in a LS1 flew past middle finger up out the window and yelled ford sucks. Sipheren then proceeded to fall back a bit, and when the next overtaking lane opened up he floored it and got up to around 160km/h and passed the LS1. The LS1 floored it as soon as he noticed that we were passing him but we still absolutely whipped him because we were carrying so much more speed. Very satisfying, but it does not mean an EA is faster than a LS1. See: Interesting, but unreliable. |

why are people so stupidly proud. I HAVE an EL XR6 manual, I CAN drive it, and i HAVE been beaten by every vnss i've dragged <about 5>. 3 of them were auto.
They're lighter, have more cylinders, more power and more potential. That said, they don't have the xr6's style or interior. Whoever said an xr6 would beat a vn ss on a track is dreaming. they're lighter body with some good suspension mods, and a decent exhaust, will produce more power anywhere in the rev range and will handle better in the end. as much as it pains me to say it's a better performance car. On the bright side, it's the best 5L commodore out there, and most of them live in the western suburbs :p. Over here in the east the most hardcore p plater will have a vs clubsport, which the falcon will have for breakfast, so it's not a concern. |

I'm serious guys. The production tolerances at Ford and Holden must be MASSIVE.
It seems that everyone has had a VERY different experience. I've come to the conclussion that Tasmanian delivered Fords are superior to mainland delivered Fords and that Tasmanian delivered Holdens are inferior to mainland delivered Holdens. This can be the ONLY explaination for it. Soulfire, you say that you can defeat a 185i Clubsport, but get beaten by 165wk automatic VN SS Commodores....hmmmm......weird....... In MY experience, a V6 VN Auto and a V8 VR SS Auto are very similar in terms of how they perform in a straight line (the V8 feels better)... I need to drink more and think less... Still, if he passed it at 140, it's too little too late So I stand by that post! Except that 140 bit... Not too weird when you consider the 165kw vn has more power per tonne, and nearly all of the ones out there have AT LEAST a full exhaust. I'm only half a carlength ahead of a clubbie, and haev been comprehensively beaten by all the vn sses ive run. |

ive dusted off plenty of near stock vnss autos and manuals at the drags and on the *coughstreetcough*
a guy i know has an auto vn ss with exhaust extractors and stage 2 shift kit and runs a 15.3@146kmh once the 304 gets a cam and a free flwoing exhaust/intake most 6cyls would be hard pressed to keep up wth one |
