Any ideas on which is going to be better for the low and mid rev range, Wade 1636 or RPD R2?
Quote: The specifications for the 1636 are as follows: Cam lift - Intake 0.248". Exhaust 0.242". Advertised duration - Intake 264 degrees. Exhaust 258 degrees. Duration @ 0.050" - Intake 206 degrees. Exhaust 198 degrees. Advertised timing - In. opens 22 closes 62. Ex. opens 60 closes 18. Phase angle - 113 degrees. R3, is already eliminated, as a. might cause trouble considering my head has been shaved, and b. according to mitchg911 Quote: but lacking a little down low for the auto's running tall diff ratios
Not that it should make much difference but is being fitted to a 94DT head, with double Crow valve springs and with an RPD or Crow Vernier Gear (just got to check the price difference between the two before deciding). |

no comment having not drive a wade cam, can't compare the RPD to a wade.. there is huge ongoing debates as to whats best.
but a good path to follow would be this. RPD have a complete no issue no hassle refund policy, if you are not completly happy with it, send it back and get the wade, again I can only comment on what I know, but then knowing the RPD gear, I am pretty sure you will be happy with it.. the RPD R-Spec 2 is about as much as the stock torque converter can handle, so still retains a nice idle with great power production. it is an across the board power increase fattening up the torque everywhere.. start there is my suggestion.

Anybody running an R2 yet?
I agree with what Mitch has said about the R3, mine was definately a bit 'doughy' down low with just a 3.45... Power really doesnt come on till 2500. No biggie with a manual, but painful with the BTR. 3.7s or 3.9s would be ideal, or a stally. It's pretty good once your up and moving. 1636 is proving to be a fairly good performer as well, Grechie did a 14.7 in his EB with one. I've driven one car with a 1636, an Auto EL Ghia, and it was pretty smooth with good power down low. I think Crow and RPD both use Rollermaster Camgears?

Partnumber for the Crow Vernier gear is CS6EA-V (http://www.crowcams.com.au/templates/Ca ... -OHC.shtml) if that's any help.
The cars already got the Wade 1636 fitted (previous to that was the 1604), but I'm not worried about changing the cam again if it's going to be worth my time doing so. If I gow ith RPD it will be with the new rocker gear to suit aswell as the idea of 6 shims and that which I've read scares me too much. I guess another option to add is the CrowCam 2222519 (http://www.crowcams.com.au/templates/Ca ... -OHC.shtml), as can get that cheap through work, but to be honest I've heard plenty of bad stories about CrowCams (mainly only to do with there springs - which I already have and fitted, in both the Valiant (which had trouble with)and wagon), so wouldn't mind steerign clear of them if possiable. Quote: VALVE TIMING - IN.20/62
EX.64/14 DUR - 262 258 .075" DUR. (0.075" duration measured at valve) - 219 217 VALVE LIFT - .493" .472" POWER RANGE - 1200 - 4500 COMMENTS - Mild performance cam EF-EL to 1/98 suit std computer. Improved exhaust recommended. The cars already got 3.45 diff in it, I don't want to go any lower, as I drive highways lots and hate the thing reving high. Stall converter I may consider in the future, only thing holding me back is that there such a b**ch to install yourself... |

Southy (manual EA, 2.92SS) ran a 14.7 I think it was a Crow 'stage 2'.
Camgears much of a muchness, get whatever you can get cheaper IMO. Have a bit of a look around on the forums, seewhat people have said. Check out the eseries quarter mile times, don't bother with the dyno thread. If you weren't in Tas, I'd say go to a cruise and question people, always handy to get firsthand face-to-face opinions. PM people who you know to be running a certain cam for their opinion. Theres a fair bit of choice out there for us now, unbiased firsthand opinions are gold in helping you make a decision.

hmm.. never had a crow cam.. but theres a reason for that. Im too happy with my RPD Rspec4
But as was said, first hand opinions are awesome when looking for a cam... Thats the true way to find out what cam is good for what, as people on here don't express they're opinions enough. And as was said, ignore dyno readings.. they're so misleading. Peak power has nothing to do with low down torque. Oh and if at all possible, definately go for a drive in a couple of cars or something. See what you're happy with, because at the end of the day, you're not gonna necessarily be happy with what someone has got, when its in your car, and you're driving it everyday. Cheers

the 1636 has proven itself with a number of mid/high 14 second passes.
very hard to judge the RPD cams without seeing the results.

i just put a 1636 into my ed 5 speed today, while still running it in the performance is near negligable, you do notice a bit of extra oomph but not a great deal, keep in mind i swapped a 1604 for the 1636.
But thats not to say dont try it. If its proven itself to be a go-er then why not.
