Hey guys, firstly ive read a bit about each cam profile, but im swapping the 1521a i have for one of these other two for $151 plus post ($15 each way). So thats fine.
First up, which cam is going to be better suited to standard ecu, ported head, xr6 exhaust manifold and 2.5inch exhaust. Engine has 200,000 km's exactly Secondly, lifters, the lifters would have to be changed from the standard cam to the 1521a and im told that if they were replaced with 'anti pump-ups' then they will be fine to use with a new cam. Does anyone know what will be required here? Not knowing which lifters are installed just yet Im under the impression new lifters are about $700 :S which seems unreasonable Cheers everyone! Matt

Any reason for swapping 1521a for a smaller cam? Im guessing its too big a cam for what you want?
Is the car auto or manual? Id say the 1636 would be better suited to an auto as its more of a low-midrange profile, the 1673 would be better suited to a manual, although some people have said that the 1673 will run with an auto but will be a bit sluggish at low revs. Damn, $700 for a set of lifters? Is that from Ford? You can get them aftermarket for a s**t load cheaper, like around $200 a set or something. You'd probably want to ditch that standard XR6 cast iron manifold for a set of Pacemaker 4480 extractors too get full benefit of the cam |

I imagine most car shops (supercheap, KRB (here), Autobahn etc) could get them. Its an auto, its meant to have a hi stall, it idles around 1200rpm Yeah the 1521a cos it idles so high, with a standard converter, pulls at idle quite hard as you could imagine Cheers for the info you covered 90% of my questions in one post, kudos!

Haha the 1521a sounds like a bit of a beast
As for lifters you can get them at repco, well you can over here, at about $30 each over here so should be a bit cheaper in Oz. I found a engine reconditioning place that sells them cheap and got them for $16 each so just shop around and see what prices you can get. I think Bursons? or something like that over there sells them too. Also found that shiftkits.com.au sells them too, for quite a good price. I'll be getting my next batch from them when i do my cam upgrade LINK Just remember that if you fit a regrind cam by wade you'll need an extra standard sized shim in each rocker arm From memory i think the 1521a was only available in billets so you probably wouldn't of needed extra shims with that cam. |

As for the cam change i wouldn't go to a 1636 unless you want just low-mid range grunt. They are a good cam but they run out of puff at about 4000ish. The 1673 is good an still pulls to redline. Im using an auto and a 3.08 diff and i had the AU series of the 1636, and now the AU series of the 1673 and it goes great in the auto.

the 1673 sucked in my auto..had nothing below 3000rpm..excellent at smoking the tyres, but useless getting off the line.
now its manual it made it a little more fun, and i should mention its got the 3.45 lsd in it.. this is all UN-tuned though, and its using way alot more then it should be..maybe if i got it tuned it would be a different story, but i wouldn't run it in a daily driver like i did.. p.s >3000rpm rev range is insane for overtaking and highway speeds |

ok maybe you need the chip aswell for the auto, i got my chip in and the 1673 cam with in a week of each other but i noticed more power everywhere when the chip was in and tuned proply.

Is the 1636 very economical? Under light driving of course

I have the 1673 in my car, it uses less fuel than when it was stock! Its also got more pull throughout the whole rev range, idles like stock etc etc. manual + J3 and no ISC helps things though...

yea i found my 1673 more economical than the 1636, but that would of been because i have a chip with the 1673. im sitting around 13.5-14l per 100km which isn't great but i drive it pretty hard.

Yeh yours is auto though isnt it?
My stock auto is sitting on 13.something, while the green car is sitting on 10.something. Green car gets driven a whole lot harder than the stocker too. |
