I wanna know this too. I have a pod filter mounted in the engine bay with no cover and i reckon it is just sucking hot air. I am going to buy a stock airbox and put a panel filter in. Dont know about a pod mounted in air box - that might be alright.

This may be a stupid question but what exactly does the pod filter do? Does it make any real difference to the performance?

pods generally have more surface area, so therefore more surface area = more air = better for the engine... but theres a helluva lot of debate, and no 'real' answer to the question - whatever you'd rather have & what works best for you! majority are of the opion exposed pod in engine bay = bad though!

like ugly bob said its ur opinion.
i reckon if u have a resonably stock car, i.e. only zorst and mild cam, stick with hi-flow panel, if ur pullin serios ponnies then pod is the way to go. a naked pod in engine bay, u loose the advantage of less restriction with the fact u r suckin hot air. thats my opinion only and i'm no mech.

Pod in engine bay is just a waste with the hot air, may as well just have your stock airbox in my opinion, but if you do it right and chuck a heat shield around it to keep the warmth in the engine bay out and a snorkel putting cold air into the sealed off area the pod is, then i think its pretty good

I've always believed that a panel filter is better. When I think of the commonsense physics of it, the air can just go straight through. I imagine that air would find it more difficult to go through a pod filter (ie it's more restricted). I have a K&N panel in my ED XR, with the standard snorkle.
A bare pod in the engine bay is a big no-no. You need to have a snorkle so the air is funnelled into it.

I am just curious, is it right to say that a CAI or larger snorkel together with hi flow filter will do practically nothing for power and economy?
This is without a performance exhaust or anything. |

This is without a performance exhaust or anything. Yes and no. The best way to test how much performance your going to get is to take your airfilter out completely and give it a kaning. That's what I did and buggered if I could tell the difference with or without an air filter so I recon the performance air filter stuff is bunk. -But improving flow to the airbox or using a shielded, ducted pod is another matter, but to be honest there is probabily not a lot in it. Using the vehicle datalogger I got a fairly constant 2-3 inches of water restriction on the MAP sensor at full power, full RPM on my stock EL which is not much really. -With the standard air filter in.

put it this way,, a friend has a stock TE50 T3 put it on the dyno with the stock pod filter, and got 194 rwkw,, 2nd run put a BMC pod filter and got 199rwkw, they do make abit of a difference

Dunno about performance in terms of Kw gain etc, but i do no when i (accidentally) drove 300k's without a air filter, i used near to half the fuel i normally would.

Depends on the setup really. I say a big pod eg BA XR8/GT pods i could see some gains but other not really. We need to get dyno proof one day of whats better.

Yeh I saw that at the Hallam AU dyno day. But on the 6L mtrs I have doubts of wether it makes bugger all KW difference. I removed my BMC filter and replaced it with a new Ryco 1 and have got better fuel econ since. Plus the stock filter that I saw being removed from the blueprint TE was pretty dirty. A better test would be with two clean air filters ghiaman |
