Hey everyone.
I have noticed that my car makes a funny noise when it is idling and the noise increases in repetition as I accelerate. I don't think it is related to the rattling noise from the timing chain when I hit 2000RPM but I could not source out where the noise was coming from. Anyways the noise is hard to explain and is pretty faint compared to engine noise. The noise is like metal grinding on metal but barely, like when you have a warped brake disc and the warp bit just touches the brake pad (if worn) and makes the shhh noise? (I don't know how to explain it ) During idle you can here it every second or so...so I don't think it is in the engine since it would repeat more over if it was in the engine. What exactly could it be? phong =P~

take the drive belt off and run it for a few mins.
If no noise then you can go fishing on any of the acc's along it. I've found the bearings inside the AC compressor make a rattley noise when hot and engaged. however when you said the noise 'dies out' when over 2000rpm... well thats about the stage the oil kicks in the tensioner for the chain. under 2k the spring does a lot of the work (i've been informed) For the hell of it.. replace the idler pulleys, I did mine this week and it cost me $44 the pair from ford. makes heaps of difference to idle sounds. Also the PS pump makes strange sounds if the vane gets flogged out (does the problem still persist when you steer?)

well the noise is always there when the engine is running...though the noise only drowns out after 2000RPM due to the rattling of the timing case which has a broken guide...the plastic bit that points up when you take the rocker cover off.
I listened for it before and found it on the drivers side. Which puts it down to the pulleys on that side of the engine...so alternator and such. Will pull the drive belt off and see how it goes...How long can the engine run without the alternator? phong =P~
