Probally the crank slapping on the oil.
How much oil do you have in there?

I agree with FRD. My EB Used to do the same thing when parked the same way at an old work place. Now it doesn't do it anymore. If that's the case I wouldn't worry about it.

they do take 5L of oil. even though the book says they take 6L.
or maybe there isn't enough oil in there and it starves for oil on a hill because the oil moves away from the pickup

What is your oil level at? And what sorta oil?
Or maybe your oil pump is on the way out? As for literage, I find that 5 liters just dosnt it it, I've just done another service this morning and with 6 lt and 500ml of stop leak it's just over the full mark. There's a fair bit of room though I think you'd need around 7 litres or more before the crank hits it.

How steep a hill are we we talking too?
Picture in your mind, the engine sideways, and imagine the tilt backwards on the hills. Or even look at a pic in a book or manual. This will help you to visualise if it may be tipping back far enough to cause an issue with the oil pump.

I'm talking very slight, best way to describe the incline would be imagine a pair of car ramps and the front wheels approx on the 2nd piece of angle iron from ground level ,but since i filled the oil to just above the full mark it has gone not completely but can only just hear it |

Probably a good idea to do an engine oil flush with oil system flush during your next oil change.

Ok, I get what you mean.
What toranaguy said too I reckon. I got hold of two of the "super-duper" engine flush packs when I was at repco an cheap thin oil and filters. I did both in a row over an afternoon giving it 20 mins and all that to work in. It left a clean spot on the rocker rail under the fill hole just from pouring the stuff in! When I did the oil change thus morning there was a small C shaped piece of plastic hooked on one of the small holes around the outside ring of the filter. The oil didn't have anything in it though. I might do a flush next service I reckon.

i have the same problem still ,i read on this site ages ago it could be the converter in the gearbox ,it will make this oil slapping noise when parked on a slight angle front up .ive had my engine out and apart and replaced oil pump, bearings and everything looked fine but still slapped so might just be from the gearbox.

Damn mreb .that's the drama i'm trying to avoid ..
i guess it's just a common flaw in fords engine design, but like i said since i have slightly taken the oil level just past the full mark it has almost gone,I can't really complain i guess this eb i have had for the last 6 years as 2nd owner and apart from regular service's had no reason to even open the hood .But this month the trusty Family car will be getting some attention like paint, rims, and a few cool mods no thanks to all the guys from fordmods for the inspiration. So i'll throw up a Progress report as i go. |

you can run the oil all the way down to the minimum mark and it shouldent have an effect on the engine noise...
if anything, if its over full you will get that knockin/slaping noise from the crank hitting the oil... |

i have tried all different oil levels made no difference so christmas will change the converter in the gearbox ,i remember something about busted veins in the converter or something ,sounds like it comes from around the middle to back of the engine ,after that im out of ideas ,blow it up maybe ,
