recently (last 2 weeks) my car has made this rather annoying rattle/clunking coming from the motor. it only ever happens when in gear (auto), in all driving gears, Park and Neutral are fine. i thought it was my gearbox, it desperatly needs new oil. but everyone that listens says motor and say bottem end, some say touque converter.

i was wondering is there somthing that dies in EF's and rattles/clunks, the sound is very similer to a diesle hilux. the sound seems to stop at around 1500rpm, but this could be because i cant hear it over the exhuast.

any help would be great.

I'm going to go off on a limb here, if it is only occuring when the tranny is in drive then its seems to me that is where your problem is tranny or torque converter. If as you say it desperately needs oil then get a tranny service done, tell them about the noise, if it is the tranny or TC they will know.

i found out what the problem was. i bit the bullit and took it to ford, they thought it was the torque converter bolts, but when thyey pulled the gearbox they found that the ring grear had worked itself loose of the flywheel, it had about 2 mm movement each way. they replaced a new flywheel, some welch plugs(leaking), and my rear main seal. all up $530 car sounds so much better now.

i hope this heals anyone having similer problems.

I had that problem in my EA.. I did the old backyard cheap fix.. loctite... held the bolts in nice and tight for 6 months. Then I just reapplied loctite and she was good as gold again.
