hey guys, recently my car has been making a really odd sound on start up..mostly when it's cold..it's not the belt at the front, it sounds kinda like it might be coming through the extractors :S

the sound im talking about is between 5 and 7 seconds in the vid :)

Starter motor is stuffed.
The pinion is not retracting quick enough and is hitting on the ring gear of the flywheel.
Take the starter out and I reckon you will see chewed bits at the end of the gear.

How long is a piece of string? Depends on how bad it is already , how often you will be starting it etc.

it's only just started making the noise and it never happens on a warm day and only goes for about a second not stop...the noise you heard in the vid is about as long as it goes for...when it's warm it dosnt make it at all

take the starter motor out and spray the pinion with crc etc, it might help it out for the few weeks
