I think that's better than starting a new thread on the topic. Anyway, i thought there was 5 welsh plugs on the exhaust side? I changed some a little while ago, and ran out of time, had to get the car running & left 1 unchanged, it looked newer than the others & ok. It's now started to leak, and i need to pull the exhaust to change the last 1. I had a bit of trouble pulling the old ones out, i punched a hole in the rusted center with a punch, then put in a easy out & turned them to break the sealant they had, then i could hit them to swing out & pull out with pliers. Anyway, it's not an overly hard job, just fiddly & time consuming. Go easy on the exhaust studs & nuts, they may be pretty rusted up. Have some spares on hand! Cheers ToranaGuy

That's cool! There are a few on the intake side of the block as well, it's been ages since i've had the manifold off, so i can't remember where or what size, but i know the next time the manifold is off they will be replaced, while i'm there, as they are rather hard to get to otherwise. There is also apparently 2 small welsh plugs at the back of the block hiding behind the flywheel or flex plate (depending on if you are auto or manual). I have to do my clutch soon, so i bought the 2 little ones to do that "while i'm there". I have a 4lt out of a car atm, i should have a look at to see where all the welsh plugs are... Just had a look at the engine, there is one large welsh plug, covered by a sticker with some info regarding the engine. There is also a small brass plug as well, but it doesn't look like a normal welsh plug?

They are only on the righthand side remove the exhaust for better access the exhaust manifold maybe loose in the middle they r two piece dont worry it is common u can use CRC spray to loosen the two nuts at the flange then remove all the manifold bolts that hold the manifold to the head . watchout not to short out the manifold to the alternator. Use a pin punch on the lip of the welsh plug to knock it 90deg. to the block. remove all the welsh plugs. here is the secret. get hold of the garden hose with a high pressure spray head and insert it in all the welsh plug holes in the block, starting from the front and watch all the rusty dirty water come out dont do it on the driveway you will stain the concrete. When you install the welsh plugs get a socket that is a nice put inside the welsh plug add a 6inch extension to the socket now u r ready to fit the new welsh plugs. First place the welsh plug vertical to the block . use at least a 1/2 pound hammer and hit the extension to install the plug. the welsh plug is correctly installed when the lip on the welsh plug is 2mm inboard of the hole face. you will notice this before you remove the old ones. gassa

I pulled an intake manifold off one last week before i delivered it to it's new owner, and i didn't bother to have a look at how many & how big.... Cheers ToranaGuy

I have the same problem with my welsh plugs.
It appears that they are leaking coolant from one on the drivers side. As i am mechnanically stupid - i need to take to to someone to do the job - Does anyone know of any good mechanic that can do same in the Knox/Wantirna area in Melbourne - Also has anyone had these done and know what it would cost to do them all. Thanks |
