Ive never used a sealant when changing welchies. I use some emery tape and a bit of brake kleen to get all the s**t off the block then tap the new plug in. Have never had one leak. The welch plug is there to act like a sacrificial block thing on an aluminium boat. Most people dont realise this, they are designed to corrode. And as for doing them all in one hit, meh, I do them as they need it. Its highly unlikely they all are going to be stuffed at the same time. I like to get the full life out of those sorts of componants as they are a f**k around to replace.

Thanks The cost of the Welsh Plug isnt much a couple of bucks its the Labour that is the killer a mate of mine was charged 1 dollar for the plug and 99 dollars labour so if you have a friend get him to do it. |

Driving home from the beer and burger run, seen spotting coming up the driveway... trace it to under car, where water is raining down, open bonnet. And after confirming on spare i6 block, seems front drivers side welsh has gone. Was squirting out for a minute or so under pressure from that area. Think I'll have to do the whole side, as there was a lot of water LOL. All i wanted was a beer and a burger... not this HF !!!!! read all the advice, and guess i know what im doing this weekend!!!

Hi All, thanx for all the great advice in this thread. This morning I spent a couple hours with my son changing over the alternator on his Fairmont EL and when we finished we noticed water leaking down the engine. Upon investigation, it was leaking from one of the welsh plugs. So in the next couple days we'll attempt to change just that one for starters. I'll let you know how it went.

but in all seriousness change all of them as my BA i had once replaced then i had the other 4 replaced all up 350 for 5 welch plugs. .do it right only need to do it once |

When I did the welch plugs on my new BA motor, for ease of removal i used a large pin punch, basically the largest one i could find in the shed which was about 10mm in diameter.
this way it didn't just bust straight through the plug on the first hit of the hammer. And definitely use a 38mm socket if you can get one to install them.... i only had a 2'' at my disposal and was forever trying to correct them going in wonky

Hey guys, replaced my welsh plugs because i was told i needed to.
( found out they where not leaking ) folowed the procedure adviced on the last couple of pages worked sweet but i smacked one in to far. had to pull it out and re set it, i know thats why its leaking now. but another one is also leaking! ive cleaned them out with 180sandpaper then another go over with 120, whats the problem? not enough glue? i was generous. And that rail was a nightmere..
