Hey guys!!
I did the 5 welsch plugs on the exhaust side a while back and now they're all leaking coolant. I'm assuming just whacking them in wasn't the best thing to do and I should've used some type of sealant or something?? I even cleaned the heavily corroded surfaces with acetone and a rag before installing the new plugs but still they leak I'll go get some new plugs tomorrow but I was just wondering if there's any particular sealant I should use? Any help would be greatly appreciated! cheers |

that STAG stuff is the ONLY s**t you should use on welsh plugs, simple as that.

cheers fellas, I got some of the stag stuff and after getting it all back together i put the coolant in and it started pouring out 3 of the plugs so I've stuffed something up. I've got 4480 extractors welded in that made it hard to get the plugs in straight so I'm going to cut the extractors out and try again. The main problem though is the holes the plugs go into in the block are badly corroded, even sanded back there's massive chunks/chips in them so the plugs will never seal perfect.. not really sure what to do here was just gonna JB weld it and hopefully I don't have to pull it apart again. Hopefully I won't need a new block haha

You need to knock them in VERY squarely, some pitting should be ok, just make sure you use LOTS of stag on them.

If there was huge chunks of rust on the sealing surface and you had to sand it back then I think you may be up s**t ditch.
But as said, hitting them in square it so Importaint, I use a socket that fits snug inside the welsh plug and tap it in that way. |

Hopefully I won't need a new block haha did you wait 24 hours for the stag to set??? in saying that I had same issue with the mrs au Fairmont, it had been leaking from welch plugs for quite some time before we got it resulting in a lot of deep pitting where the plugs go in, unfortunately the stag just wouldn't seal. so the alternative was to use ultra blue gasket silicon, I lightly coated both surfaces and tapped the plugs in, wiped off excess and left it to set.. its been close to 3 years and so far no problems.. |

Try fitting these style of welsh plugs.....1935 Willys 77 engine....they are like a curved, dish shape made of steel.....no sides like a normal welsh plug.....they have a stepped hole, and they just sit in the hole....they are not an interference fit.....once glued in, you then give them a tap in the middle with a rounded punch......it is an art to fit these......hit it too hard, then it isn't going to seal.
Just showing you guys what else was/is out there.....you know....automotive history stuff.
