Hope you did not damage the walls of the hole the plugs came out of. Usually a good idea to use a blunt drift in one side of the welch plug and tap it down. the other side will come out and you can get hold of it with vise grips or similar and pull it out. Clean the hole with some emery put some sealant (your choice, gasket goo comes to mind) on the new plug and drift it in with a snug fitting socket. Not too far or it is start over time. Use quality anti corrosion fluid in your radiator refill. By the way, probably a good idea to replace all of the welch plugs at the same time with brass ones.

no only smacked the plug itself not the walls. twisted it round and pulled out with pliers... used some sealant and socket when put back in, ok so far although i did see a bit of an air bubble after a drive, hoping it was just the sealant bubbling

I find the trusty air chisel is the easiest way to get welch plugs out. (I've had to do way too many )
