what are the differences between a ea t5 and a el t5??
both are 6 cyl ones.. is it just ratio changes? or is there external differences too? (i havent noticed. but i havent taken a ruler to it to make sure though) only reason why im asking the ea t5 in the eb has been making noises and there only getting worse... rattling and jumping out of reverse if not held in reverse. and being a right b**ch to select gears sometimes (clutch is adjusted correctly too) oil level is fine.. and i change it once every 6 months too. and i havent had big chunks of s**t come out yet.. sometimes just a few bronse filings but i was told that was normal by the trans specialist i spoke to when i first noticed it i got the ea when it had done just over 300 thou. did another 60 thou in the ea (the ea was factory manual so i have no reason to suspect it had been changed at all) and ive only done possibly 15 thou in the eb.. so i could say its well and truly due for a reco. and i doubt it had ever been done anyway.. (but i am on clutch 2... so i havent been nice to it much) i have the el t5 here. but didnt fit that when i did the conversion mainly due to not knowing the differences and the el casing has damage to it which means i had to swap the el internals into another casing which im in the process of doing now.. clutch wise im running a ef xr6 clutch so i know im fine on the input shaft splines.. its the output shaft that im unsure of but im hoping i dont need to source a later tailshaft to get the correct yoke? |

there are some internal differences as in ratio's and bearings..
but the el t5 will bolt straight in and the clutch splines are the same.. |

i had an ef box which shat itself and had replaced with an ea t5...
ea box feel like a tractor gear box compared to the ef box.. was always crunching into reverse unless i dropped the revs heaps.. 1st gear is shorter in the ea gearbox comparedf to the ef box.. If you have a choice get the ef box!! |

If you have a choice get the ef box!! yeah they do feel a bit agricultrial.. but much smoother than a holden 4 speed which are noiser again though. the ea t5 likes squealing in 5th on the highway up a slight hill so im going to pull it apart to see what broke.. i bought the el box a few years ago..iirc from russel on aff. not many wreckers are willing to seperate a conversion if they have one in the first place. i have no need for the other stuff. and its money i dont have to get another conversion atm Last edited by 89S-PACK on Tue Sep 01, 2009 1:11 am, edited 1 time in total. |

If you use an EA box go into 5th, then reverse, shouldnt crunch then.
