G'day guys, as the title suggests I'm after some opinions on what I can expect from an 2001 AU falcon with 400,000 kilometers on the odometer.
It's for sale for $2500, which I think is fairly good as the lady who is selling it said the mechanics, body and interior is in good condition. I'm going to look at it tomorrow and see what kind of bady and interior condition is, but because I need a car to drive urgently I won't be getting it inspected or doing much digging myself. Is this car something to avoid or can I expect some reliable use from it? I'm guessing that the gearbox and differential may be in rough condition (especially if it hasn't been serviced) but what about the engine? Seeing as it's got the metal two-piece head gasket is 400k 'equivalent' to 200 somthing kays on an E series? Cheers for any help

If the car is in good nick I dont think I'd be too worrird about the k's. Sounds like it's had more highway miles than stop-start cold running with that many k's.

If it has that much mileage on it already i wouldnt be paying that much for it, was it a cab and as for the head gasket comparision it doesnt come into it have a look on ebay you can find one with around half that mileage for that price we did, My son picked one up from the gold coast on ebay that had 98000 k's on it and he got that for $1850 around a year ago so dont rush into it look first that is alot of K's

this what i do when it comes to e-series,
take it for a drive, full throttle it as much as possible, look out for sloppy gear changes, bad break shudder, worn out suspension, bad engine noises, noisy diff, bad steering rack. also ask if its got a service history, and don't buy it unless it comes with a road worthy certificate, you could end up spending more on that then what the cars worth.. rock up with 2k in cash and a transfer paper, if all seems good

There was one for $2400 with 260k that looked good, but I've never seen such a bargain in Tas.. Maybe I just don't look hard enough though :p Anyways, I need a car pretty quickly.. Has anyone got an AU or similar with high kays that's still pretty low maintance and reliable? And cheers for the advice 4dlvr, that's what I planned to do, 2K cash should do it :p revhead, I'd say it's something like that, be pretty hard to get 400 kays with short drives

My Au tonner now has 330000 on the clock and I travell 550 to 600 a week in sydney with no problems an 70l of fuel.

My EB has clocked nearly 390kays. Still on original engine. Only have rebuilt auto and done Headgasket. Other than that if i did not tell you how many kays were on my car by the way it drives you would think its new. At the end of the day it all comes down to how its been looked after.

I agree with the comment above. Make sure it comes with a RWC or it will most likely cost you more than what its worth to get it on the road. Also I think for that sort of money you should be able to find one with lower km's. Also if its on gas and been for most of its life I would steer clear of it.

Or is it just that if it is then it's probably an ex fleet vehicles or something and it may have had more than its share of wear? Engines on duel fuel generally have a shorter life span than a petrol motor. Gas causes alot more wear and tear on an engine as it doesn't lubricate conponents the way that petrol does.

Shorter life hey? As in 800,000kms as opposed to over a million kms? Do you seriously believe all the stuff the ex fleet vehicle haters tell you?

Engines on lpg last longer dude
Man there are heaps more falcons out there with half the kms and bout the same money so id skip it for sure and look around for something else.

Man if you believe its a good car then get it. Its not like its costing a fortune and if the engine dies you can get second hand ones for a few hundred anyway.

I recently bought an AU2 ute with 400k kms. It was cheap enough that even with an engine and gearbox change I was still way under the price of the next alternative.
It was a courier car and did trips from Swan hill to Melbourne frequently. As long as it doesnt make any funny noises, clunks or blows smoke its a pretty safe bet imo. Mine drives perfect. The only issue is a torn door trim. |
