hey all. My mate drives a VT v6 on gas.. and yesterday morning he was driving normally.. gave it a bit of stick.. then loud noises started coming from under the bonnet.. opened it up.. and the side of his airbox was in pieces! and the rubber seal on the right hand side of his filter was gone aswell. now his car often stalls.. he hasnt got the box replaced yet.. but i just want to know how this could have happened? and what could have changed in the car to do this?
Cheers guys |

I'd say the mixture is wrong. It sounds like it's backfired and blown up the airbox. It's probably blown a hose off as weel. Have a good look.

Yep gas has backfired. You can get spring loaded clips for the ford air boxes that prevent the box self destructing but I don't know if they fit commodores.

Backfires on gas are not usally caused by mixtures. 99% is caused by stuffed leads, plugs and or coils. Gas does cause the backfire. But only cars on gas backfire you say, so gas must cause the backfire, WRONG.
Cars backfire on gas but run fine on petrol because gas needs a better spark to light the fire, and because the mixer is mounted before the T/Body the inlet manifold is full of an explosive fuel air mix so a stray spark when an inlet valve is open and BOOM. Gas cars using Vapour Injection do not backfire, because there is no gas in the inlet manifold. So the answer is Plugs[close the gap to .8] & leads. I got caught with a bad coil in the Salt racer, 87MPH backfiring, changed the coil & nothing else 117MPH, closed the plug gap and ran 128mph. Regards TPVM.

Regards TPVM. definately sounds ignition related if nothing had been tampered with before hand, boy have i gone through some boxes and cooler piping in my time! ignition leads have mainly been the issue with mine, make sure he gets some good quality leads not el-cheapo's. too much heat in the cheap leads wont last too long before it does the same thing again so get some good well insulated ones and colder plugs, tell the blokes at repco its on gas and they should know what ones to supply.

lean mixtures will cause a backfire. why do you think they remove rev limiters when fitted gas to a car.
if you mixture is lean and like the OP said he nailed it and it backfired. it may have leaned out causing a backfire.

I've popped off vacuum lines a bit too causing it to lean out and backfire, but it's more likely to be ignition related than something to do with the mixture if he hasn't been playing under the bonnet. After it backfired he may have popped off some vacuum lines too which would be the reason it almost stalls now. go around the inlet manifold and throttle body and have a close look and listen for any lines disconnected. hopefully it's just something small and not a damaged AFM or something to do with the gas system.

I didn't say all backfires where caused by spark just most. Yes you can get a backfire with a lean mix because it's harder to light the fire with a lean mix. So it can still be a spark issue. I know I sound like a broken record, but I fit Gas for a living, so I am supposed to know the answers. I don't know them all, just lots. You get that from playing with cars for 45 years. Regards TPVM.
PS Wish I'd learn't to touch type.
