If my cars oil is at high pressure as the gauge says, what could causes this?

what oil are you using is it the correct one for your car

oil is fine, have been on the same one for a little while, all os a sudden the gauge just went up. Even when I dont drive it hard it still sits up high on the gauge

Have you actually tried using a lower consistency oil? Other prob is your oil switch or sender (whichever one you have) may be cactus.

stuffed oil filter, narrowed oil passage from build-up maybe?

when was the last oil change?

play around with the easiest part first, you're trying to pin point the prob.

A faulty or poor connection on the oil sender can give a high reading on the oil guage.

- bad sensor/connection for sensor (first port of call!!!!) can check this by hooking up a mechanical gauge and comparing its readings...
- blocked oil gallery
- blocked oil filter
- oil too high a viscocity

alot of oil filters these days have a pressure relief valve in them this could be stuck or not operating properly, as metioned check sensor conections first if not that do a oil and filter change on it using a ryco filter and 15/40 oil as this is the grade of oil spec by ford

If this were the case would the needle still move, as when I am driving it goes right next to the red, when idling it drops off a bit and as the car warms up it goes even further down when idling.

Its not a pressure relief valve as such its called an anti drain back valve.

I had the same problem on a EF fairmont I just bought. The oil pressure would just about be off the gauge. A quick change of oil and filter and its back to normal.

The needle will still move but will give a higher reading as the resistance is higher, from memory if the plug is removed from the sender the needle will go to max on the guage.

Other way round. If the wire is removed the gauge will register nothing. If you touch the wire to ground the gauge should go through the roof.
