Howdy.
I've read a few different posts on this site and some people say that their EL's have "hybrid" engines. From what I've read, a hybrid engine is parts of an AU engine in an EL engine (not exactly sure on the specifics). I have two questions; 1) What is it exactly that is different from an EL 4.0 to an EL "hybrid" 4.0? 2) Has anyone driven the two back to back and noticed a differnce between the two? |

How good are they? Hmm.. somewhere between an EL and an AU
These questions are best asked in a more appropriate forum such as the 6cyl forum, rather than 'off-topic'. Also try searching, has been covered in depth a few times.

maybe we should get arm79 to write an article/review on the "hybrid" he seems to know them best.

EL Block,
AU Spec head (AU cams fit them) Hybrid crank shaft and conrods (AFAIK) EL Pistons Thats from what I can gather. My EL is a dinky die EL, none of that hybrid stuff! I'll line up a hybrid and give it a run

Hybrid is basically a AU bottom end with an EL head and rocker gear. Nothing really fancy. Its got the better ballance of the AU bottom end (less wear and revs much easier) and the EL rocker gear looks stronger than the AU stuff. especially the valves. Build your own hybrid. Just go to the wreckers and buy an AU block, and EL head then bolt them together. I know a few AU bottom ends that are approaching the million km mark without even a rebuild. Hell my fairlane has over a million but its had new piston rings fitted. the bores were not even touched.

I used to have one, the driveline was basically stock, just had a K&N and bigger CAI. I never got beaten by an EF/L that had the normal motor in them. in fact AU's were easy to kill and I gave a BA a run 3 times one day and just got him after 4000rpm every time.
from what I recall, they have an AU block, custom crank to fit the bigger journals in the AU block, EL rods, EL pistons, EL head??? but AU rocker gear, not sure on the cam but I know they were different to the normal EL's. |

Hybrid motor has a EL style head with AU style rockers cams/ports
And I can't remember the bottom end, but it uses the same balancer! |

wow does anyone really know... alot of s**t in here.
- EL bottom end (may or may not have a custom crank, I haven't pulled apart my bottom end) But from part numbers the block is definately EL. - AU head/rockers/cam (I'm running an AU grind ALTED/RPD cam) They rev better because of the low intertia valve train, and breather better because of the bigger valves. And the EL bottom ends are pretty darn tough anyway.
