The commonwhore has been overheating majorly... i'm too scared to go on the commodore forums, so, i thought i'd ask people that have their heads in the right place
Is there anythign other than water that you guys use? Because, water doesnt seem to be doing a very good job, it's dark, so i havnt checked it, but it was fine about 3 weeks ago. The temp gauge was right up on max when driving homw from work today, also when going to get a slurpee tonight..

water makes stuff corrode dude....
it should be distilled water at the minimum.....but F**k Anything with a corrosion inhibitor would be better than water

lol, well, the main thing is, that it's been gettting realyl hot, now, obviously is the engine temp is running hot, then it's gonna screw the engine down the track.. not, i don't like the commodore, but it's a car, and it gets me around... so, i'd rathetr have it, than not have anything at all.
Would using a specific coolant give better engine tempratures? btw, it's '95 VS w/ 242 000 kms

It should i mean it must be green for a reason, although u can get it pink or red aswell. I would go with wat came in the car from new, to be safe as i said b4 nasty things can happen, well i think they can. I know wat ya mean dude i have a falcon and i still hate it, only cos i want a xr6t but yea this old gurl gets me places!

Water boils too when it gets hot, coolant has a boiling point much higher than water
I reckon you're rooting that motor of yours

it all makes sence now... would explain why it did it on a 31 degree day, it would also explain why the car is always running at about 3/4's high on the temp, even though dad said it was "normal".
How high on the temp are you guys running at? (with cars in the same sort of year) Also, how much is some coolant going to cost me? and do i have to remove all of the water before i put in the coolant?

About a quarter up from like the bottom so yer u r gettin a lil hot, i would drop the water, depends of the coolant because tectaloy is like a concentrate so u add a bit then fill er up with water. Umm i been thinkin tectaloy would probably be ok, if u use water it will eat the engine out eventually or it will cook b4 hand.

if you really couldnt be f**k
just go to repco, supercheap and ask them for a pre mixed coolant to suit your car but yes, you will have to dump the water, and refill the system. Doing it properly and opening the heater etc so u dont get air in the system

rightio, well, the power steering is getting serviced next week, i'll get all the coolant and what not done then... in the mean time, i figured out noone was home, drive it into the garage to check water levels... seems it was very low, i added about 2ltrs in there, took it for a drive and the temp has halved! So, that should do me for the next week till i get some proper coolant, but i'll keep an eye, and a few bottles of water handy!
Thansk for the advice guys

Use whatever has been previously used.. Mixing coolant can be very bad.

Yeah arent the ecotec V6's suppose to be like at 50% concentration for Coolant at least. And you are only running water. You probably need a System flush at least as probably the water isn't circulation properly from all the water and crap

just give it a quick flush with the hose and then get a bottle of tectalloy gold it only cost about $20 to $30 for one litre and that will do the whole lot as it is the concentrate one
