i see that that is the way it works, and i have no problems for the $300 or whatever fine to be handed out on the results of an emmissions test, whether it is ignorance or intent that has caused it, but that is slightly different to the 10k fine for tampering...

in summary, yes hand out the $300 fine for an unoperational cat on the results of an emmissions test, whether it is through ignorance or intent.

but i think you would need something else to go on (excluding the 'tap test' - would it hold up in the eyes of the law??) before slapping the 10k fine on someone for suspiscion of tampering.

all up, its a pretty hard subject to police...

Ask Hyena what happens when you gut the cat, as per the thread title!

From memory, his cat was stuffed inside. There was chunks of ceramic all through his exhaust. He gutted the cat, and I think he had blue flames at one stage coming out the back.

Its all fixed now though.

Fully sick - i want a blue flame.

A cat doesnt stop blue flames - it stops poisonous gasses getting into the air. If there are blue flames coming out of his car then he should ask his boyfriend to behave himself.

Not exactly blue but back in the day you could have flames coming out your exhaust/s simply by rigging a coil and a couple of spark plugs into the tail pipes and setting the engine to run a little rich. You wouldn't get away with that in a modern car though, lol.

Seriously though, if they're going to start actively testing for and pulling over cars with dodgy cats they'll need to develop some kind of non-destructive test to differentiate between one that's simply worn and one that's been deliberately tampered with. An ultrasound, sonar or radar set up might just do the trick as all you'd need do I think is check for a density difference inside the cat - cats that are simply worn would still have some material in them whereas a cat that's been tampered with will naturally enough be mostly empty.

wouldnt this sensor they use return the same result if the cat was stuffed?? which im sure there is plenty of people with stuffed cats that dont realise and probably wouldnt be real impressed with a $10k fine...

it's actualy illegal to drive a car with an unoperating cat.
the $10 000 fine come from purposly making your cat unoperational.
the same gose for tampering with any pollution gear fitted to the car.
things like EGR and air injection systems fitted to early unleaded cars that only use a 2-way cat.

so that would include doing up the air injection tubes in my old 626 with bolts? :D

I'm not agreeing that gutting your cat is a good idea, but what is the difference between an EF falcon with a gutted cat and my misses 1984 mazda 626 that has to run on ULP because the government has removed LRP from the market..
