Ok guys,
I wanna know the correct name for this part. On a 98 model EL falcon I6. You know when you open the bonnet and you can control the throttle with your fingers ( ie . Lift the revs with the accel cable. ) When you leave it rested it sits on a small screw , i think you can adjust the idle timing by how deep its screwed in (is that what its for?). what is that called? the screw part Ta .

Ta . yep thats your base idle - depending on where the screw is, your base idle adjusts as such

ok cool,
So if i screw it in more, it means that the car will run richer on fuel? what is the proper setting for an EL , what Rpm should it idle at in gear?

its know as the 'idle stop screw' and it is put there from factory to keep the idle to a spec and must not be tampered with .............

doesnt have a great effect on car peformance really. If you lower it, the ecu will catch on and readjust itself to rev higher anyway, if you raise it normally the ECU will notice this and will rev lower but run richer on fuel. It has odd ways of learning but it can tell what ur idle is and adjust its fuel mixture itself.

Ok so your NOT ment to tamper with it, why does it have a screw there? it must mean that some sort of an adjustment can be made.
I was asking because , my car was idling at very low revs in gear, in drive it would idle at under 500rpm , so i got a screw driver and turned that screw a few times clockwise and it lifted the revs. but i was not sure if it was heathy to do. but what i REALLY wanna know is , how do i find out what RPM the engine should sit on if its in gear and foot on the brake. Maybe all you guys with 98 model EL i6's can tell me what you get.

yeah about 600 on idle is about right. this is when the car is warm so it might be a bit lower when you first start it

Ok tell me if this is what i should do to make sure its all good.
I'll drive around till my car reaches its normal temp, put handbrake up put it in drive , open bonet and tune the revs to be between 500-750. Would this sound ok to do ?

Personally i wouldnt leave the car in D. That's putting a lot of faith in your handbrake. Best to adjust idle when in N/P and then see what it drops to in D - adjust accordingly.
