My car is a '98 EL Fairmont Ghia (Sedan).
I recently had a collision with a gutter which tore one side of the front bumper from it's mounts, clips, etc. The collision also caused the black stone guard to warp so I have been driving without the stone guard (stupid move I know). I was driving down the highway yesterday and a small black/grey box fell out from under the bumper and went hurtling into a gulley beside the highway. I have been unable to locate the box. I am hoping that after viewing the attached image someone might be able to tell me what that box actually was. The yellow circles show the hose/tube and connector that were attached to it, it doesn't look as though fluid flowed through it. Thanks for your help.

Does the charcoal canister do anything important? I assume it does. |

It's emissions control crap. Nothing that I would call important. You should put it back though, or else you'll notice the smell of petrol a lot more. It's only $5-$15 dollars from the wreckers, and you might need some hose too, and some cable ties to hold it in place.
yeah while car is at idle the solenoid turns on so to speak and all the unburnt fumes go to the canister and collects and absorbs in the charcoal not that important but it is a defectable item..... (as some people think the car will go better when they remove them )

Definately get it back into working order because your car is classed as unroadworthy without it functioning correctly.....It will also void your insurance too.

Does anyone know exactly how many hoses, etc. connect to the charcoal canister?
Is it just the two hoses that are showing in my photo or are there others? Maybe someone might be kind enough to take a photo of their carbon canister for me Thank you. |

This is going to seem like a stupid question but is there a special method to attach the hoses (rather stiff hose) to the plastic ribbed connectors (see blurred photo below).
I haven't been able to attach the hoses, even brute force won't work! hehe
