hi all, ive got a carby 250crossflow xf falcon and the engine makes this rattleing noise but only when its under load like when im giving it a hard time or i start to climb hills on the highway and thats the only time it happens, no noise like this at iddle or when just crusing at highway speed. i was thinking it might be a bottom end bearing on it way out but this bloke at work was telling me if the timing is out that could be the cause. could the timing being out cause this sort of problem?

It sounds like its pinging check your timing and advance.

Yep, my vote goes for pinging.
Check timing, quality of fuel etc.

is it an 84-85 leaded if so check fuel quality maybe you need a lead additive

thanks heaps everyone. i thaught that he was refering to pinging but as i didnt know what pinging sounded like prior to me asking that question (i do now
 ) i didnt want to start talking bout pinging and be way of the mark and just get myself and every1 else confused.

Is it on gas? if so it could be a bad fill of gas that can cause it to ping.

nah its not duel fuel, unleaded only and has been doing it for the last 3 or 4 tank fulls. ill get the timing checked asap.

Ahhhhh the old xf giving you trouble mate
 Last time I saw it the poor old girl could do with a wash  ...but my guess is pinging. Probably sounds like a rattling timing chain or at worst an old chaff cutter. . Get the timming attended to or change your fuel...
