Recently I was f@rt assing around with the car and noticed this thingy (pictured) Now my thermostat has a slight leak and it looks to me the coolant has blown back onto this "thingy" and has burnt on there, now it has a connector on it and im sure all that burnt coolant on it cant be good. Anyone know wtf it is and what it does? lol cheers

no flaming of the dirty engine bay neigher please :oops: hahaha

EF's came out with coil packs, and there down further with the leads going into them. But as for the leak ive got a leaky thermostat, which i think is blowing back onto that "thing" lol

Crank angle sensor? That is where the dizzy is on an EL. Obviously some other sort of sensor or cap is on there.

That tells the coil pack when to fire, basically the EF's just have a smartened up distributor, consisting of the "thingy" which has a shaft running into the block like a dizzy does, and wires on it which tell the coilpack to fire. a rather essential component.

Okay, cool, so in other words that could be why my car is miss fireing and idling bad.. Do you think a bit of a clean up may fix this problem?

no harm cleaning it up i guess.. should i just degrease it or actually pull it apart and stuff it .. lol

Not sure if you can get them apart?!? never realy looked that hard, I would just pull the plug off it first and see if there is any corrosion, and sort that out if there is, probabally not a godd idea to wet it anymore than it looks like it already has been.

Must be careful.

Usually plugs like that (I know the TFI distributor plugs do) have a conductive waterproof grease in them. Keeps the water out.

I know my plug doesnt have that grease in it, and if I have any water drop onto the plug, the car will drop spark. Sometimes no spark at all, until its completely dry.

dont bother with that, try leads and plugs first. then if still doing it will most likely be the coil pack. had the same thing the other week and was the coils.
do u find its misfiring when u accellerate?

Firstly fix the coolant leak.

I know the dizzys in all other models ground to the engine by the dizzy body touching the block. When it gets wet.. No more gound, dizzy not work so good... Might be a similar situation.

Maybe clean out the plug and fill it with grease again..
