Castrol Magnatec.

But I've been told Castrol GT is the go (not GTX), but you need to go to a castrol distributor to get it as it isn't sold in retail stores.

I know this has been asked. But I've done 166,000 in my '96 Fairmont and the engine is in good nick. Slight piston slap at idle but every other Falcon does it I think.

What is the thinest Penrite I can safely go in your opinion. I'm looking at changing viscosity, to lessen the load on engine, and increase fuel economy?

Running Shell Helix ULTRA 5W-40 Full synthetic Brilliant oil. :D

I was using Shell Helix Ultra too some time ago, but personally I thing it's just a bit thin for our falcons especially in hot summer. Very good oil, but now I'm using Mobil 1 5W-50 fully synthetic. It gives you complete protection even en extreme conditions, and being fully synthetic, it can last much longer then mineral oil. Using both I can tell you that with Mobil 1 engine runs smoother and more quiet. This is probably due to Mobil's higher viscosity. Only downside is it is pretty expensive. From what i've heard there is only one better synthetic oil from Mobil 1, and this is American Amsoil. But I think they don't sell that here in Austalia.

Olive oil for cooking schnitzel and steaks, Oh you mean in the car engine.

Amsoil High Performance 10W40 full synthetic, as Hornet said 12 months or 40,000 Kms per change.
Amsoil filter also, costs more up front, but long change intervals, low lubricity breakdown.

opto, good to see another Amsoil user, if your after Amsoil, contact me :)

I also run an Amsoil oil filter, Amsoil Air filter (supposed to flow as well as a K&N and filter as much as a paper filter), and Amsoil in the diff and box.

2-3kw gain on the dyno was good enough for me :)

shell helix ultra has a better viscosity index than mobil 1. As viscosity depends on temperature, a measure of its sensitivity to temperature is expressed by its viscosity index (VI) value. VI is determined by comparing the change of viscosity with temperature to two reference oils – one of which changes very little with temperature and is given a VI = 100, and another which changes a lot and is given a VI = 0.

i have been using helix ultra for years and never had a prob. my current ride has 285000k's and still going strong.

personally i would only use full synthetic and if its made by a major brand then its going to be alright.
