Alright,
I think the ford need some oil, so i'm gonna pick some up tomorrow, and even it it doesnt need it, i'll have some anyway! What oil do i put in it? ie what grade. My transmission isn't as smooth as it was so i'm thinking time for fluid change - what fluid do i buy and how i change it? Sometimes my diff can make some strange noises (mainly slow tight turns etc (car park)) - the car has an LSD - what fluid do i put in it and how do i change it? -------- I really meant to get all this crap done a while ago but did head gasket etc etc and I've decided that it wont hurt it to change the fluids! so yeah help us out if you can guys |

1. Engine Oil - any 20W/50W within budget
2. Trans oil - 4 speed auto - 95LE oe equivalnt - to drain drop the trans pan, to fill pour it down a funnel down the filler tune, amoutn needed when empty is 6L @ $40 per 4L. 3. Diff, really needs to be sucked out and then pumped in via the filler plug, to check it take the plug off, stick finger in, oil at plug level good, lower bad, top up to plug.

Chunkz you DO NOT put dexron III in 4 speed autos unless you want to kill them.

Do NOT put dexron III in a ford 4 speed automatic!!! You will destroy the poor thing. The BTR LE fluid is specific to the BTR series of 4 speed autos. Most oil companies make a BTR fluid tho - BP, castrol, shell etc. I'm a big fan of mobil 1 but ive given up on it as i cant justify 70 bucks of oil for 5,000km. Penrite has been very good to me. Grade depends on condition of the engine but yeah - 20w50 a fairly safe option (not sure if penrite actually doesn a 20w50? they seem to have strange viscosities like 15w40 etc....) Transmission fluid is usually changed as part of a service. Replace the filter and gasket whilst the pan is off. Oh, and wear old clothes I'd recommend taking to a shop (not a ford dealer please) and getting a proper flush of the converter done. Yeah there's a drain plug on the diff, open her up and use a pump to get it out. Make sure you use proper LSD fluid.

Isnt the center/bottom bolt on the diff cover a drain plug also?

Dellboy999 wrote: ummmmmm, that could be a point waggin, anyone know or got a pic of the inside of a diff ? Changed the oil in my ute's diff earlier this year, lowest bolt is a drain - no need to pump it out, just let it drain normally. For an LSD you need SAE LS 90 EP oil. Be sure you read the label for suitability before buying - conventional diffs use different. Diff capacity is 1.65L.
