Hi all
Big problem with my ED. My wife started it, backed out and it stopped. Now it refuses to fire. Plenty of fuel, not sure of spark but I suspect none due to not firing. Turns over at a miillion miles an hour, no fire. The car is currently stuck about 3/4hr away in a reserve carpark. What would I need to take with me to change, to somehow get some firing happening...? Cheers Bruce

Hi mate, i'm no expert but have you had a look at your rotor button?
if its winding over but won't start thats what i would suspect but as i said i'm no expert, it would be worth a try!! Hope this helps you mate. Cheers Jason. |

I'll try anything!
Had suggestion from BenJ that it could be either the smartlock module, coil or TFI on the dizzy. Gonna take all 3 with me back to the car, might as well take a rotor and cap as well.... Cheers

what is the smart lock light on the dash doing when the key is off?
what about when the ignition is on? check the control lamp fuse? remove a wiring plug off an injector, put a multimeter on it, and turn the car over - any volts - if the smartlock has factory disabled the car it will have cut out the injectors. either fuel, air or spark. unlikely to be air as you'd probably see if your air intake was completely blocked. so for fuel check the injectors as above. fuel in the tank? can you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key over? spark is easy to check - pull an ignition lead off, crank car over and see if you get a spark jump when you hold it next to an earth. |

Smartlock is doing a slow flash when iginition off, nothing with ignition on.
Control lamp fuse? Will find out which one and take it with me. Unfortunately don't have a multi meter so can't check that. Have fuel in the tank, fuel pump does it's priming. Was tempted to take off a fuel line but didn't due to pressure. Tried the sprak bit, pulled a plug out and held it against the block. Either I am blind or there wasn't one..... About to load up the other car with bits and tools and head back there...once I have pilfered my other cars...

you don't need to even pull a plug out, just a lead off and held near. you should hear a bit of a tick when it jumps besides being able to see the spark.
what about the coil lead. because of it's position in the inlet manifold a lot of people don't replace it often when changing leads. it does 6 times the work i would think so would stuff up earlier. control lamp fuse is red 10 amp. and for some reason when this blows on my EF the BEM just goes into a head f**k - factory immoboliser kicks in and out, interior lights stop working, and a few other quirks. |

yup, done that - no spark. Ran out of time to get over there. Do I need to take the manifold off to change the coil or is there some convoluted way of getting in there. Also, is it a must that the dizzy comes out to change the TFI?

Hey RD
When some people replace the coil, they don't put it back in the factory location. As long as you can plug in the wires, you can mount it where ever you like. And yes, the easiest way to get to the coil is from underneath. It is a 10 or 8mm bolt x 2 from memory. It is also common for the TFI to fail at the same time as the coil. I am not sure if you need to remove the dizzy to replace it. BenJ

Thanks Guys
Will take a jack with me in the morning. Ben, thanks for the tip on the coil, I was going to ask that exact question - does it need to be put back in the same place. Infact, does the coil need to be fixed to the bodywork/engine or can I tape it somewhere temporarily. The biggest deal to getting the TFI off is getting at the screws. I will have a go tomorrow by rotating the dizzy to see if I can get to them. Not fun in the middle of a damn carpark in Carlingford!

not true, take out the air box assembly, make life a heap easier for you. but, there isnt a real easy way to get to it, and you may have to resort to getting under the car. been there, done it. pain in the a** when i did one for a mate, we strapped it down to the k frame i think (hard to tell what the hell it was as i couldnt see while on my back.) he drove it at 130kph for over an hour to get it home. worked fine. if you relocate it, use a big earth strap

Ok, I'll take a dizzy with me too. I assume *if* this is the case that I can safely remove one and replace with the other?
