hey
i noticed while driving there was a fairly loud rattling noise the other night. anyway i stopped to check it out bt didnt find anyhting loose or so. anyway this morning im taking off my rocker cover coz im gonna spray it. being the first time i had taken off the rocker cover on my car i was having a look at the cam etc and i noticed this big chunk of metal whihc was broken off from somewhere just sitting under the chain!!!!!! ive got pics of it too. has anyone else ever had this happened to them? Its and EF I6. we were tryin to take it out with some long nose pliers but another piece came off and is very close to falling in...!!!

hard to see what it is, but by the sounds of it you may have a broken timming chain guide.

yep, thats a snapped timing chain guide. Exact same place mine went a couple of years back.
You have to get it out before it gets caught up in the chain and destroys the enigne (although it might sit there happily for a few years). Changing the guides will involve taking the timing cover off, which youll need to either drop the front of the sump or pull the head off to do. Good chance to change a head gasket if you need to.

Is there another way? I have only seen the guides in the kits (~$60) which have the guides, tensioner, and chain.

Yep thats exactly what my el looked like about 7 months ago. took the motor out to fix it properly, does not weep any oil between head and timing cover now.

Didnt think so. Cant imagine anyone buying the kit, pulling there enigne down then replacing just the one. Suppose somebodies done it though

It really depends on where the piece has come from. If it came from the top of the top guide, which it appears to be. Then you can get by without replacing it. The same happened in my EA, broke the top 20-30mm off and I just fished it out and drove around for several years without any problems.
