It looks alot like head gasket to me, but im hoping it could possibly be cat converter?
The reason is this s**t is currently coming out the back of my exaust pipe when I rev it. The car got subject to some hot temps and has not been running right since. Black smoke out the exaust, rough idle, gas backfires.. Initially I thaught it was from the MAP sensor vacum hose blowing off during a backfire which did fix everything the first time, but now it runs s**t regardless... blown head gasket? damaged MAP sensor? both?? -- Just to add to few things, I cant self test anymore for some reason, STI works and the car enters the test mode, but STO gives no output so I cant figure much at this point.

Check under the oil cap.
Is there white stuff underneath?

Doesn't appear to be any, also the overflow tank does not look suspicious.

Well, that's a good sign to start with
Not sure how to test everything else without the right tools. Think I'll have to leave it to others..

Looking at the colour changes in it, it really does look like gasket material.

judging by the pics in the photo each bit has perforations in them. It looks most likely like a exhaust gasket that bolts your cat to your pipe...it wouldnt be a head gasket, you'd notice more dramas than that.

I would think if it was head gasket, a leak would be reasonably large, i.e. water/oil or both - granted sometimes a HG can blow and not have water leaking, but as I say, seems like a lot of material.
The other thing is would the material make it to the exhaust rear, as it would have to get through the cat, resonator and 2 mufflers. I would think it would be out of the cat or the resonator or the 2 mufflers, possibly most likely the rearmost one behind the rear axle (if your system is stock). Best to get the coolant checked for combustion gases, but if you're not experiencing any water loss, I doubt the head gasket is the issue. Correct me if I'm wrong though . . . . .

Looks like carbon crust built up from the perforation pipe inside the muffler. the pieces are to big to be blown through the cat converters honeycomb.

Another vote for an exhaust gasket.

G'day this is my first post... by the looks of the rubbish in the pic its exhaust gasket... could even be from the manifold and it could of blocked ya Co2 sensor and they might be the reason why ur car is running like s**t. so take the c02 sens out and clean it and maybe look at ur cat or ya rear muffler... also if it was head gasket it would make it out of the cylinder and chunks that big would have a hard time getting past the valves.
Regards rob

I am also leaning towards the exhaust gasket. BTW is your exhaust an aftermarket 2.5" connected to the 2.25" cat converter?

The thing is I am now experiencing considerable water loss, the exaust is blowing white smoke too.
I had a leak before this whole thing happened, which is how the thing got hot to start with, but the white smoke has me concerned, shortly after this s**t blew out my black smoke turned to white smoke.
