Hey all,
I have recently had a fair ammount of work done to my EF I6 and it goes great but half the time when i plant the foot it seems to hit a heap of flat spots almost like a carby car does, I reset the computer and that worked for a day then it came back? any ideas? Cheers.

Does it only hit the flat spots when you floor it?
Then it sounds like you have reached the limits of the ECU, when your not flooring it the O2 sensor is controlling mixtures. But when you floor it the ECU goes into open loop mode. With all your mods it's probabily not getting enough fuel. Dyno it and check your air fuel ratios. If no good think about a chip/interceptor or aftermarket ECU. AND/OR since you have increased compression it is getting detonation and reducing the timing - are you running on premium 98? Any pinging or knocking sounds from the engine under load? Detonation and lean mixtures can damage your engine so take it easy untill you sort it out.

I have a flat spot in my new engine too. It kicks in about 3000 rpm and comes good about 4000. It's particuarly noticable in 3rd gear, especially if you're going up a hill. It'll be happily pulling away then hit 3000 and stop accelerating then come good again.
It's going on the dyno tomorrow so I'll check it out then.

a unichip ?
That's a very expensive way of trouble shooting! (altho worthwhile anyway if you have the money to burn)

yea s chip is a very expencive way of trouble shooting but it's the only thing thats not been checked and checked again, every one thats seen and played with the car don't know what the causes is and all put it down to it not beening chiped.

Lean mixtures leads to burnt out valves. Detonation leads to all sorts of trouble. Too much to go into briefly. If you drive around with a pinging engine and thrash it, you'll be up for a new engine within a couple of tankfulls of petrol... depending on how bad the detonation is. It can last a long time. I've heard stories about people getting engine rebuilds with performance modifications and getting the car towed back a few days later with a totally destroyed engine just because the timing was off. |
