When you say completely dead, I hope you don't mean anything under 10V. Lead acid batteries (other than deep cycle) don't respond well to being discharged like Nicads do. A lead acid that has been sitting for a while will initially draw high current if the charger is capable of supplying it. A 4 Amp charger will charge a flat battery up just as well as a 20 Amp charger but it will take alot longer. I have seen 300cca batteries take 24 hours to fully charge at 4 Amps in our battery shop.
A battery charger is nothing more than a unregulated power supply. Just a step down transformer and a diode rectifier. The bigger the transformer, the more current you can supply to the load (battery). The Projecta and similar units have a bit of smart electronics in them to control current when the battery is charging and fully charged. The cheaper ones don't but if you keep an eye on them and remove the battery when fully charged, no drama.

I got an AC Delco battery charger which I picked up from supercheap auto 2 years ago for around the $90-130 bracket.
Has 2-4-6-10-12 amp selectability which it winds down as the battery gets close to fully charged. Also has a maintanance charge only feature and a vehicle charging system tester built in. Also has battery voltage and charge percentage read outs. I bought it to charge motorcycle batteries and its the best charger that I have ever owned. |

i just got a cheap one from supercheap think it was $20 about 5yrs old now never let me down..
was thinking about getting a jump start one tho |

i also got a ac delco one, but its the top of the range one (about 200 i think?) its got all the features cabbi mentioned plus an alternator tester.

Mines got an alternator tester too but I called it a charging system tester because motorbikes have stators and not alternators.

You hook it up and start the car, then turn all of the accessories on (lights, radio, aircon) and the battery charger makes all of the measurements and lets you know if your alternator is s**t or in good nick. It picked up that 1 phase on my stator on the motorbike was dead as I could ride all day without headlights but only get an hour with headlights from a full battery.

Go back a page. I have an AC Delco but the projecta brand is just as good, if not better.
I'll never go back to a cheap charger ever again. |

Its basically a soft start. When you connect it up to the battery and turn it on the charger voltages is matched to the battery voltage, then its ramped up instead of getting the damaging step change like old school chargers. The old school cheap chargers were basically 13.8-14.4 volt constant voltage power supplies. With the new chargers you can leave your battery connected in the car when you charge it and it won't do any damage to your electrical system.

So the smaller charger won't charge Batteries under 2V where the larger one will.
