Im in the market to look for a good battery charger. I want to know what i should look for as im not an electrical minded person. So what do you actually look at in a battery charger to determine that it is decent and will charge your 12v car batteries, also it will last. Any info would be great.

I bought a battery charger was just a cheap one and it works perfectly well. I think there better than the more expensive ones because my mate bought an expensive one and it wont charge dead batteries they have to have a certain amount of charge still left in them. had mine for over 5 years and still works perfect.

Something cheap from Autobarn or Supercheap would do the job. Mine is made by a company called Projecta....Was fairly cheap but have owned it for over 7 years and has charged ALOT of batteries in it's time yet it still works like new despite the hard life it's had.

dont buy a cheap one from super cheap or K mart they dont last very long at all if you are going to buy one spend a little more so you get your money's worth and it last that bit longer

Projecta make good units. We use them to keep the batteries charged on our fire trucks and also keep our base radio battery charged. We only use Projecta trickle chargers (1600mA) as we only maintain the battery state. For battery charging, look for 4 Amps or better but I wouldn't go too high (Boil electrolyte and excessive Hydrogen production). I use a regulated 13.8V 6 Amp power supply (d**k Smith) to charge my motorcycle battery when it gets a bit low (lack of use) and put a 6.8 ohm wire wound (10 watt)resistor in the line to limit the current. Works very well.
As SV-Valiant said, you get what you pay for. $20 will buy a cheap charger. Look to spend $70-$160 on a smart charger (Projecta or similar). We charge lead acid batteries in our battery shop at work and set the constant current to about 4 Amps so you wont need a big charger unless you want rapid charging. Some of the more expensive units can supply 20 Amps. Great for getting you going but not for battery life.

I've got a Projecta IC1216, its great for when I don't drive my car for a while, easy to hook up & at a quick glance you can see whats going on.

Personally I have an elcheepo 2amp charger that takes 24 hours works fine for me but I think alfy12 more than answered your question

Well I have a battery charger my dad bought 14 years ago...which was when we were still living in Germany and still has the European style plug on the end...it still works to this day and cost my dad a measingly 20DM (DM = Deutsch Mark), which I think works out to be about $13. So cheap brands aren't always the worst.
My mate bought one from K-mart which I managed to tax off him...it's pretty fancy, can charge at different rates and also has a function where it cycle charges a dead battery that way not to kill the battery even faster. Also has overheating shut down...so it's pretty fancyful compared to my dad's one. However as someone mentioned about one of their mate's...it doesn't work unless there is a certain amount of charge in the battery, which sucks for a totally dead one.

I've been meaning to buy a new one for a while now, want to get one of these new fancy ones either Ctek or Projecta, but at the moment, still using a 7 year old $15.99 unit from Supercheap without an issue!

Yeah i thought i would save a buck or two and got one from supercheap a couple of months ago and it only lasted a month and cant find the receipt now so will definately spend a few more bucks and get a decent one next time and not from supercheap.
